Custom Licence Plate in London?
Discussion
Hey all, I'm thinking of swapping out my front plate for a small one (stealing the idea from Lusifer's car). I called autoreg to order the plate but they told me that they now need to physically see all the original documents before they can make plates which 'might not be legal'.
Does anyone know of somewhere in London who makes up small plates or am I being naive in that anywhere can?

Hi Richard no I will not give my details to the CCCUK, I will try and meet you at the open day so you can hit me although I am 6 2 and a judo Dan grade, what have you done to the front of your car it almost looks as bad as a C6 what have you done to your number plate I think it looks awfull why not buy a 6x12 and fix it where it should go, or be like me and be ready to pay the £30 fine, ( if I forget to fix my front plate that is I can't remember if I have drilled it yet only had the car a year, ) the real reason for this post has any one had dealings with States Plate in the near past, I had very good service out of them about a year and half ago but a friend and club member with a 2003 ZO6 paid for two sets and never got them and he even wrote to them with no reply so be carefull.

Actually, that's exactly what I'm after (though I might try an even smaller font (whatever's legal according to DVLA for a non euro-type approved non-standard fitting - 66mm? 64mm? Have it somewhere...).
Putting the plate in the 'proper' hole is horrible and I've been meaning to change it ever since seeing a picture of Lusifer's job. It's a real eye-sore having driven around in the US for 18 months without one.
Now, of course, I'm just starting to advertise to sell if I can get a good price or to keep for another year if I can't :-) I wanted the smaller plate on there for the pictures, but what I may do is just take the plate off temporarily (or leave it - it's Sunday and I'm feelin' lazy!)

Spiralling out of control :-)
Yep, took the DVLA specs to Halfords and they were able to take my order (1 week delivery time). My plan is to just bracket it up using bent strips of aluminium as and when the plate arrives.
Actually easier than I expected, though the Halfords folks did not come across as being that bright (though helpful, so I'm not complaining at all!)

Like I care, Mick. I take it my bonnet hasn't exactly been a hit with you either.
If it's any consolation, I think the majority opinion is that maintaining the 'corvette' nose is the most elegant solution. Having the front plate at all is a compromise solution. Although it would have been dangerous I wish it were legal to retain the amber running lights, too, which to me were a cool feature of the stock car.
In other news, a subtle change but swapping out the original black plastic C5 logo for a chromey one was a really nice touch. Looks very cool.

Hi Richard I did not know about the bonnet but yes I think it looks good and will look forward to seeing it for real at the open day and as you have your old one you have the best of both worlds, I only saw the number plate stuck on the front of your car C6 style what is that all about.

If you look closely, the front plate is hung off using brackets. The C6 uses a big ugly plastic mounting block which blocks the front air intake (D'Oh!). I agree that the C6 fitting is incredibly ugly and poorly conceived.
I don't know whether you've seen the C5 front plate mounting solution but it's hardly pretty as you take a chunk out of the nose profile and recess a square plate in there. Yuk! Hanging a plate off the nose may look a bit 'add on' but at least you're not detracting from the original look of the car. Take a look at claremont corvettes cars (www.corvette.co.uk) to see how nasty the standard solution looks.
With my Z06 I should be able to get away with teeny-tiny numbers rather than the standard size ones as she's not euro type-approved and doesn't have a fitting for a standard size plate. It looks to me (correct me if I'm wrong) as though ragtop has gone for the regular size numbers. I'm assuming that it's a euro-spec car in which case I believe you're required to use a larger font.
Even so, it looks better than the other option!
Just my opinion :-)

Kenski, the logo on the front is the standard factory silver 50th anniversary badge. It looks chrome in the pic but it is a black badge painted silver (not very well, I might add, as the paint is peeling off).
Gosh, illusion shattered!!!
I would have been interested in swapping mine out (chrome on silver would have looked good) except that the black matches the rear air scoop, aerial etc on the Z06...
These guys do custom fender emblems
www.xmsengineering.com/accessories/
'ckin expensive, but they might know someone that does chrome 50th badges......
I'd would tempted by the Z06 Turbocharged bagdes but at $226 a pair that's a bit too rich for my taste.....

Probably a bit late, but if you go to (or know
) a signwriter who uses vinyl then you can get a custom plate made. They can use yellow vinyl stuck onto perspex, or anything else you want as a backing, & cut the characters to whatever font/size you want (or will fit). It's up to you if it's legal or not. I've done this on my Vette (legal size, Officer) & have put those cheap metal surrounds around them. Or you can get a coloured frame cut from vinyl to stick around the border instead ie. it's totally up to you how it looks (or if it's legal).
An alternative is to buy a sheet of yellow stick on backing from a decent auto factors or caravan place. They are sold for CK (Caravan-Ken) to make plates for his mobile road block. I've seen the backing for sale since the law on plates changed, so it should be available. The characters should be available from a classic motorcycle shop. There are 2 sizes, the ones for the front plate being smaller.
cheers
p.s. I've recently had a look at a few C6's "in the flesh" & in my opinion (as a lowly C3 owner) I reckon the C5 looks nicer. Sorry. Maybe it will grow on me, but the way I view that attitude is this: if I was stuck on a desert island with a complete trog then, after long enough, I'd probably convince myself that she wasn't bad looking at all (Hmmm, her toes are cute, if I ignore the hair on them). But it wouldn't make her better looking
Should I be getting my coat around about now?
