Fancy a Boxter but done have a big budget, around £12K. I want a 987 and NOT a 986

Obviously at this price mileage will be high-ish, say about 80K miles.

Is 80K miles on a boxster high be it a 2.7 or 3.4? BTW Undecided by which to go for, brute force of the S or more involemnet getting the best out of the 2.7?

I assume IMS bearing is something to look out for? Scoring bores I have heard mention.

get a 5 year Tesco loan at 2.9% and buy a 987.2 2.9 you will be paying off the loan faster than the car will drop in value so will have an asset and a easy car to sell. A 987.2 2.9 will look after you more running cost wise also imo.

todays best bargain cars to own imo esp if you love driving also.

2 examples.

Have owned a 2009 2.9 Gen 2 manual for 4 years now,its a nice day toy for my wife so isn't doing a lot of miles, has been faultless and not expensive to look after by a local Porsche specialist. There are plenty of Gen 2s in your price range with a few miles on,saw one at Cavendish Nottingham this week at 9K wearing its 173k miles very well, looked more like 73k,build quality is pretty good. Go for it,you wont regret it!

Have a look on boxa.net for some enthusiast owned cars for sale, usually a few available and great for answering any questions.

If you can, get the Gen 2 987, a bigger and more modern interior and just a ‘little’ bit better all around.

Buy on condition, not miles. A low miler that’s not used regularly can throw up more bills than a regularly used car.
Options are all over the place, rare to find 2 cars with exactly the same, so work out what you really want and aim for those.

Good luck with the hunt

Bigger and more modern? the interior of the gen 2 is pretty much the same except for the more modern stereo/satnav

There is more room in the gen 2 - not huge amounts admittedly.

If you can, also look for extended leather, transforms the interior

Extended leather is not on my list of wants.

I would like heated seats tho.

Can expand on this please as it seem sto contardict what others have said. I admin PDK has been mention but the mileage, views seem to suggest high miles not a problem and Gen 2 better than Gen1

a lot of cars a gearbos are design to last the life of a car, this is 100k miles really.

selling a car over 100k miles is hard as nails.

PDK is also not a good seller in this model now, it's old tech, people buy old tech to get a old feel which is in the main manual cars.

you can buy what you like but it will be a lemon to resell.

MY advice was buy a 987.2 2.9 manual with a tecso loan at 2.9 %

I bought my late 05 3.2S for a little over your budget 2 years ago. It has extended leather and was sub 50k miles with impeccable service history etc. Late 05 will have the better later IMS and the 3.2 is less likely to bore score than the 3.4 - its almost unheard of. I had the dealer fit a low temp thermostat and I later fitted a deeper sump and the very best Millers Nanotech oil in slightly thicker 5w40 weight. Having read all the Hartech guidance, I think those are relatively cheap and effective precautions worth taking. I have since done a long and hot Pyrenees trip and a shorter Alps trip and the car is great. I am also running coilovers, race seats, LW 18 inch wheels, big front brakes and a Carnewal GT exhaust, but it was nice even as a standard car.

For me, the gen 1 S makes more sense than gen 2 2.9 - because, more tq, slightly more hp, slightly shorter gears, lower purchase price. And there are plenty of them around, so hold out for a good one.

Thats that a more balanced reply, thanks

So, being realistic and sticking to 12k max. If I want a 50K car then I am looking at 2.7 Gen 1

This looks to fit the bill - https://tinyurl.com/qmjp4om edit, opps this is a Northern Ireland

Looks nice OP - hope it has a 2nd key though as they can be expensive to purchase.

Would that fall into the expensive road tax band (£500+) or scrape into the lower rate? real PITA on cars in this price band

I know you have a budget, but you can always stretch if you need to wink this one looked quite nice and sounds like its had a lot of work done to it by the previous owner

ooooh - sport edition is nice.
Needs an MOT and the last one it still showing some expensive advisories so check they have been done.
On the plus side, lots of choice and a good time of year to be buying

Not sure if you want a tiptronic or not, and its at the other end of the country to you - but this is listed on Boxa.net recently

Porsche Boxster 987 2.7Tiptronic 2008.
GT Silver with Extended full Cocoa Leather, 65,000 miles. 5 owners, 18” alloys good tread on the front and new Bridgestone F1 on the rear. Full up to date documented service history with Porsche or Porsche specialists. Owed three years, new radiators and condensers in my time. Zunsport grilles. Bose HiFi, Heated Seats, Ice cold Climate Control, Parking Sensors. 2 new style keys, owners handbooks & book pack. Body is nice as you’ll find for age. £8999 located London N13

Thing to remember as the miles go up is that although in the main the engine and box are designed to go for a long time, top mounts on the suspension will go saggy, engine and gear box mounts loosen up, control arm bushes and all that get slack.

These cars give you all the pleasure in the bends, not so much in a straight line.

Personally for me if I was buying at 80k miles I would be planning to replace everything suspension wise. Not really that much if you buy smart and look around, ebay etc.

That’s why just saving a few k more for Lower miles or one that had it done is probably a far better proposition in the long run.

I got lucky and found a 2.9 with 7k miles on it last feb. I have put 10 k on it within a year and it feels nicely broken in now.

Planning to get everything overhauled at 40k miles as on previous cars it’s where things start softening up.

I guess it all depends how picky you are with it all and how tight u like it!
