When I rebuilt the 1984 280 I didn't get the 5 speed gearbox refurbished as it was fine before being laid up for a decade. Since it has been back on the road, It was making plenty of noise and I wanted it rebuilt prior to sale, so on advice from my mechanic I ordered this bearing kit: https://www.bearingkits.co.uk/FORD-TYPE-9-GEARBOX-... which he fitted.

The noise is much improved but it still whines in first and second gear which I'm not happy with. Mechanic has recommended I buy a new laygear cluster plus new first and second gears.

Wondering whether anyone has undertaken this job and knows whether this is the right part? https://www.bearingkits.co.uk/Heavy-duty-Ford-Type...

Transmissions are way beyond my skillset so hooping for some guidance please, given this is not going to be a cheap exercise...

Thanks gents.

Sorry Toby. I can't help on this one. All my boxes are LT77s and pulling a box apart is not something I've tried yet.

I'd be inclined to give the box to someone who can strip it, see what's needed and source the parts. Ideally let them drive the car before you strip it out.... again smile

You could do a lot worse than these guys...... BGH Geartech

P.S. what oil did he/you put in it after the bearing job?

Thanks, good question re oil Mike, I'll have the check and advise, it's been a while and the car is still at the mechanics. On the bright side he's offered to do the work for nothing, but that means I don't want to pay someone else unless I have to. Already spent considerably more that I'll get back when I sell it this year, which is fine, but there is a limit.

I've sent out some emails to suppliers also so we'll see what response I get.
