Boys behind girls for three decades
Discussion
So boys aren't very good at exams.
England's schoolboys have had worse exam results than girls for 30 years, secondary school league table data just published confirms.
Girls are now 14% more likely to pass English and maths GCSE than boys, with 64% of girls doing so and 56% of boys.
On current trends, the gap between rich and poor is set to be eclipsed by the gap between males and females, in terms of university entrance, within a decade, campaigners say.
The former head of university and college admissions services, Mary Curnock Cook said she was "baffled by this yawning inequality", which revealed a "massive policy blind spot".
"On current trends, a girl born today will be 75% more likely to go to university than her male peers," she said.
"By then, the gap between women and men will be larger than the gap between rich and poor."

So what, if anything should be done?

A mate of mine is a primary school teacher all the boys want to do is play football and it doesn’t help when Liverpool play under 19’s in the FA cup. How is he going to teach them RE? You don’t need that to kick a ball. Maths yes you will need that to count your money.
I’ve no problem with it personally MRS BS2 is wealthier than me I’m more than happy with that

Historically girls did well when coursework came in as a major component, and multiple choice questions were largely dropped. With recent curriculum reforms involving less or no coursework and more exams including multiple choice, boys have started to close the gap. As expected, this is seen as 'unfair' to girls.

It’s strange how it doesn’t filter through into earning more and flipping the wage gap.
Who says it doesn't. Up to age 30 or even later girls earn the same or even more. The gender pay gap is primarily caused by those who left school thirty to fifty years ago!Edited by JagLover on Thursday 6th February 13:18
In terms of the subject of the thread this seems to be about achieving a basic level of attainment, I.E. Cs at maths and English at GCSE level.
Going by my own school experience in a comprehensive (admittedly a long time ago now) a considerable numbers of boys go to school to slack off and mess around. I never noticed the same thing with the girls, even those who were less academically gifted didn't seem to make much trouble.

Indeed. Curriculum and exam reforms have been implemented there also (GCSE) within the last two or three years; as boys make a come-back or even nudge ahead, it'll be unfair to girls as per the A-level article linked earlier.Fittster said:

>Waits for the inevitable backlash<

As far as I can remember girls have always done better at school than boys.
Both males and females have equal opportunities. However this is different to equal outcome.
Women tend to chose lower paid / part time work and also chose to have Children, look after families which slows career progression and earnings.
Men tend to stay in work longer.
Also what's interesting is that Studies have shown Women don't marry down the social scale, they Marry of equal or better social status or earnings. Hence women aren't always the bread winners.
Men on the other hand will Marry down the social scale.
So basically Girls are smarter than Boys.
And the Rich will always grow wealth faster than the poor. Otherwise we're all screwed.
Nothing new really.

My grand daughter is only 7 and she has been complaining this week that the boys at her table in school are behaving badly and stopping her working. The teacher has had to move the kids round to break up the troublemakers.
Had similar from my daughter when she started at "big" school. She'd come from a small primary (100 pupils) and gone into a large secondary (1200+ pupils) and used to come home in tears about the boy's behaviour. They weren't doing anything particularly bad, just continually playing-up - talking, mucking about, throwing stuff around, etc - in class and she just couldn't understand why, and she was worried that it would affect her marks and results.Mouse Rat said:

Someone's been listening to jordan peterson - i'm surprised you didn't start talking about 'agreeableness' - something else to explain the wealth gap. or equality of outcome being a horrible concept...Both males and females have equal opportunities. However this is different to equal outcome.

So that is probably a large part of the answerAt my comprehensive we had more boys than girls because there were some good girl's schools nearby. So say the average class had 17 boys and 13 girls and you can bet that 4 or 5 of those boys would be acting up. Whereas the most the girls would be doing would be chatting to their mates when they shouldn't. In fact the only times I can remember girls getting into trouble were a couple told off for having skirts too short. Personally I thought they should be commended, not reprimanded, for that.
Translate that nationwide and girls of average academic ability are getting the minimum Cs and similar boys are not.
As to what you can do about it well I think some schools have stricter discipline than others and maybe boys respond better to that, whereas girls can still progress in a more lax environment.
To bring a bit of science into it
The mean intelligence for both boys and girls is similar if plotted on a bell curve but that for boys is flatter. In that you have considerably more boys at both the higher and lower end of the scale. This might depress the number of boys reaching a certain minimum standard vs girls.
It is also scientific fact that girl's brains reach maturity earlier than boys, just as they physically reach maturity earlier. Hence no doubt the received wisdom that girls are more mature than boys in their teenage years. This gives an obvious advantage in an exam taken at the age of 16.
