Motorcross bike in a pick up
Discussion
How do all,
I would go out and measure mine but I have an issue.
Had a head on smash in my pickup last week so it's at the insurers (not my fault, some person driving on the wrong side of the road)
Anyway, I was thinking instead of putting a towbar on and a davecooper rack if I could just get a ramp and load it into the back of the pickup.
It's a 2018 L200 Warrior and my bike is a KTM 250 Six days (road legal) but moreso for moving to other areas for riding.
Thanks in advance, hopefully this makes sense as I'm currently off my tits on various tablets (no broken bones but a very sore back, neck, knees)

Sorry to hear about your accident , hope you make a speedy recovery ,
so pick ups I've always had them, for bikes if your talking about the little japanese ones like l200 , navara, ranger , Hilux a single cab is best will carry 3 with the tailgate shut , then the extended cab type will carry 3 with the tailgate down , a double cab is a PITA only room for one and as you also have to put them on at an angle and then leave the tailgate down ,
oh and having two good loading ramps makes solo loading safe , one ramp you end up with the bike halfway up the ramp and you then need someone to hold the bike while you get into the bed , if you have twin ramps you can follow the bike up.. simples
the best truck I've ever had for bikes was a 2wheel drive hilux single cab , nice low loading hight and lashing hooks along the side of the bed ..
Also had american trucks quite high for loading but plenty of space ..
bikes on truck and caravan behind perfect...

Up until recently (we've bought a Lwb van) my brother and I his 10 Yr old double cab Ranger for moving our bikes to and from riding areas and races. To get then in we had to have tailgate down and top and tail the bikes. We tried using wheel loop type things, like you would use to park a bicycle in, but still needed a fair bit of faffing about with straps. Last going off my brother had a quick load system bolted to the bed, it made loading his a 5 min job. We still added a couple of straps for safety, but the initial loading was easy and doable by 1 person. The quick load thing has a quick release to take it off the bed and just leaves a little base.
Of the race we go to, there is usually a good handful of boys who use a pickup, most jufst have the bikes in the bed, but I see a few with Dave cooper racks. I think it comes down to the maximum vertical load permitted for the top bar. Pickups and vans are fine for enduro bikes, but small vans and most cars can only really cope with a trials bike.

I used to work for a company that supplied Nissan
I would drive a navara as my company vehicle. It was between 09-10 so was the D40 variant
That would often have a CRF450R and CRF250R in the back. You need to have the tail gate down
I also used a 24 mx folding bike ramp. If you put one bike in on an angle with the steering turned you might just be able to close the tail gate but it'll be tight!
Two things to consider doing this though. First is it's a bit of a nack running the bikes up the ramp as its quite high vs a van. Second it ensuring its properly tied down. I'd highly recommend a bike chock
There is the security aspect too. If the pickup is your work horse then go for it. For my it worked well. I put my kit bag etc in the bag dropping the seat down from my double cab making it like a big boot
Have some pics if you needed to see but think you get the idea
