I don’t think I’ve ever felt the need to start a thread about a film before but this is it. If my wife is anything to go by it’s an easy one to overlook too…“is it some artsy film with subtitles? I’m not watching that”, but in reality that couldn’t be further from the truth (well, it does have subtitles) as it’s really accessible, the themes are universal, it’s very funny and without giving too much away it really defies categorisation.
I caught it at a secret screening in December and that really is the best way to see it, on the big screen with an audience with as little knowledge as possible (I wouldn’t even recommend watching the trailer). I’d put this up there as my favourite film of at least the past 5-10 years and I'll be going to see it again this weekend.
It gets a fairly wide UK release from today at pretty much all the independent cinemas and plenty of multiplexes too (Odeon, Cineworld etc), coming off the back of loads of sell-out screenings last Monday in the UK and a limited run in the US where it was almost impossible to get a ticket. I imagine the many awards and nominations will only help in that respect (2 BAFTA wins, nominated for 6 Oscars etc).

I saw it at the Odeon screen unseen in December too. It isn't released anywhere near me yet, I'm hoping a wider release does come soon. I watched the Kermode and Mayo review of it on Youtube today, Kermode gives it a big thumbs up. Apparently there's a black and white version of the film too, sounds interesting, hopefully they put that version on the Blu-ray or digital release.
It is one of those films that is better the less you know beforehand, for the screen unseen, I hadn't heard of it at the time.

I watched a lunchtime screening today. It is indeed everything you say above - and more. Utter genius in story, cast, cinematography and message. Agree that it’s one of the best films of the past 5 years, although...
I thought it was beaten by both JoJo Rabbit and Marriage Story, which for me are both films of the past decade. Alternatively I might just have a thing about Scarlett Johansen...

Fantastic movie, saw it a month ago on an Unlimited screening.
Original and funny and shocking, I will watch again in cinema in a couple of weeks when all the fuss has died down.
Oscars was a shock but no doubt helped by the mounting pressure to better reflect achievements by women and racial minorities (taking nothing away from the film)

I read an article that made a pretty solid case for it simply because it's not a film that was splitting votes unlike pretty much every other film. It's near universally loved and hasn't generated a single bit of controversy. The Best Picture category is the only one done on preferential voting, so taking the above into account, it was very very unlikely to be picking up 8th or 9th choice amongst many voters.

So it won as it got everyone's 2nd or 3rd choice vote? (for example)The Best Picture category is the only one done on preferential voting, so taking the above into account, it was very very unlikely to be picking up 8th or 9th choice amongst many voters.

If a single film doesn't gain 50% of the voters 1# choice they work backwards from the the film with the least #1 votes, they then delete that film from the running and shift the votes accordingly and so on, so you should end up with the film with the broadest cross section of votes in 1st, 2and and 3rd.It's a bit more complex than that but that's the basics. It could have ended up with 40% of the #1 votes and then a higher percentage of 2nd and 3rd choices, basically.
