FW wants a EICR (electrical report) done on a property he's looking at buying. Quote him for the test and squeeze him in short notice.

Slight issue on job, the FW has informed the occupier the test "will only take 20 mins". I inform her its more like 2 hours, she has an issue as shes due somewhere, but due to me working quickly to take necessary readings and checks in about 1 hour and leaving the filling in the cert for later when off site, with occupier bumping her schedule slightly to accommodate, we manage to make it work. I'd mentioned to occupier there may be a "test limited due to time constraints" but as it happened we made it work. He calls me when I'm driving away and I inform him due to time constraints I haven't filled the actual cert out but he'll get it later, together with a less technical language brief explanation of what it means, and a quote for remedial work. Email him everything that evening. Nice and efficient and I'd like to think good service, and as theres some serious advisory work that could also mean redecorating to factor in thats useful to know regardless, but may also be a bargaining chip in negotiations you think he'd be pleased and grateful yeah?

Just had a email from the FW:

I have a question following your visit, I was under the understanding that you were unable to complete all the required work due to time constraints. Therefore I would expect this to be reflected in the final price of the inspection due to it only taking 1 hour instead of the allocated 2 hours.

Could you please send me a revised invoice so I can arrange payment to you straight away.

FTB I think, entitled fking tosspot wkstain, probably a millennial with a 116d. Too much of a man-child to know the value of a known decent tradesman to a homeowner!

So you did one hour of work and want to get paid for two?

nope, I quoted him a price for work of unspecified duration which took part in two stages, first of which was an hour...

Actually going on his adjustment logic coupled with that he thought it was a 20 minutes job he should be offering me about x5...scratchchin

Shall I put that on his requested new invoice?

So he's not actually received the certificate?

If he hasn't then I'd be tempted to tell him to shove his request for an amended invoice where the Sun doesn't shine.....

Incidentally some customers are p155takers of the highest order.

A member of the family does PC repairs and has his own shop. When he first started he would regularly have people coming in to the shop, ask him to carry out a fault diagnosis, ask him what part was needed to fix it and then ask him where the best place would be to buy the part from. I'm sure on a couple of occasions he's had people asking him to recommend Youtube videos of how to replace the part.....

Another good one is when people bring him components that they've bought off Ebay asking him to test them. Pretty annoying when he sells the same components himself.....

nope, he had it all that evening... I'm aware with many in the trade payment comes before the cert but I like to work on trust!

Seems to me it depends if the quote was for either (a) doing whatever was required to provide a certificate, or (b) for two hours work.

no timescale was mentioned, until the occupier told me she'd been told it was a 20 min job wherapon I replied "its more like 2 hours".

I'd love to carry out EICRs and get paid by the hour but clients tend to desire fixed prices upfront and EICRs are generally not worth "casing out", and as this story illustrates, clients are pretty poor at estimating themselves.

For thread closure I replied explaining my position, sans FW references, he has backed down and said he'll pay me.

That's good to hear; often these misunderstandings are simply because the customer doesn't know what's involved, and a pleasant explanation can put it back on the rails. Mind you if he sees your calm rational opinion of him in the first post I expect you'll get nothing!

I'd actually say the exact opposite and remove any mention of time - unless you are getting paid by the hour.

but where'd you stop, if I loaded quotes with enough information to pre empt every brain fart a numpty might offer they'd resemble a telephone directory and no-one would read them anyway.
I offered him morning 8:30 or afternoon 1pm...
