Hey folks, need some help.

The mother-in-law can only drive automatic vehicles and doesn’t have a lot of cash - I previously helped her source a little 2004 Yaris with the strange SMG-like auto box but this has recently failed, we got 3 years out of it though so for the money (same budget) it didn’t do too bad.

I’m basically looking for the most reliable automatic city car for <£1,500. I’m fully aware that this is chuck-away money and that it’ll be a gamble, but suggestions appreciated. I’m leaning towards another Yaris, or a Honda Jazz. Anything else I should be looking at?

FWIW I tried to persuade her to lease a car, but she’s having none of it.

An earlier Gen1 Yaris with the 1.3 and a proper auto (I think up to late 2004), not the SMT or failing that a Jazz CVT depends on finding the right car at the right time, reasonably local to you.

Cheers,

Chris

I inherited a 2009 Micra k12 CVT about 5 years ago and gave it to my partner. Apart from consumables it's been trouble free in that time.

Suzuki Swift or Nissan Micra/Note and you won't go far wrong.
