I'm looking for some advice. I'm bringing my car out of winter storage, I have already insured it but the MOT expired some months ago.

I understand I can drive to a pre-booked MOT, but is there a limit on distance I can drive? Getting an MOT on a saturday morning is tricky. I can get one near my home but not where the car is stored, around 60 miles away.

If I have a pre-booked MOT, can I drive 60 miles with insurance assuming the car is roadworthy? (I know it is, I know it will pass).

Thanks!

Should be fine, given the circumstances.

Presume you declared SORN when the old licence ran out?

The exemption from Excise is contained at Schedule 2, Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 which states:

A vehicle is exempt vehicle when it is being used SOLEY for the purpose of:

a) submitting it (by previous arrangement for a specific time on a specific date, for a compulsory test, a vehicle weight test or reduced pollution check, or
b)bringing it away from such a test.

No restriction on distance is mentioned.

whether or not a vehicle is being used for this purpose is a matter of fact and degree and it would be ridiculous to hold that a driver could not buy petrol or make a short stop providing that he is on his way to the test (Sec of State for Transport v Richards [1997]......on the other hand it doesn't cover buggering off on ones holidays it would seem.

Thanks for that DVD; it was declared SORN and the tax disc returned to DVLA & refund received. I have the new insurance documents in hand, the MOT is booked for next saturday. I'll carry out a pre-mot inspection and drive within the limits! I don't need the agro of being pulled!

The MOT place said it's fine to drive to them now it is booked but I'd not rely on their position in court, but the statement above seems pretty clear.

Thanks!
