I've spent the last 5 years pottering around in a woefully dull 318i E46. iI's been fairly faultless but so, so dull. I've recently started to get the train to work, and as such, the old boring BMW was being lost in the sea of white / silver cars in the car park. There was only one feasible option to no longer have to try and work out where I parked the car:

laugh I've always had a soft spot for these after borrowing my mum's gen1 1.6 years back, and owning a yellow car is something I wanted to tick off the bucket list. This was advertised with "an exhaust blow" and "full service history" at £650 with no offers from a trader, and on Saturday morning I couldn't bring myself to head down to the unit to work on the money pits I already own (2 x 309 GTIs and 1 x 205 GTI) so somehow going to view this seemed like the perfect antidote to my dull E46...

.. the viewing was a bit of a disaster; the car cut out about 10 seconds after starting and we had to wait around for 15 mins whilst a friend brought a jerry can down. The electric sunroof got stuck wide open. The dealer assured me before driving up there that the tyres were all good - the tyres are not good. It had the exhaust blow as promised, which was very prominently in the centre area of the car. Once inside the car, the thing we both noticed immediately was the air con / blowers absolutely reeked of urine.

I drove it for about 2 minutes around the block, decided that the clutch was also on its way out and I was going to hand it back and walk away... and then somehow I was transferring money and signing paperwork??? laugh

The car was on ebay as well and due to end the next day, so equipped with the various faults I haggled down to £525 and did the deal. I figure at that money it was worth a punt, and worst case I'd just sum it up as a bad decision and punt it on again. It's worth remembering at this point that this car will save me valuable seconds trying to locate my car in the car park each evening.

Drove it home approx 70 miles, and on the drive home, I couldn't help but notice how good it is. Drove absolutely straight, no vibrations or wobbles, everything works (electric windows, mirrors, goes hot and cold, air con works) and despite the reviews online, the 2.7L V6 engine pulls incredibly well.

Now, day one observations: It's going to suck on fuel. It's a 2.7L V6 so I knew that, but yeah, it's going to suck. The car had two skull stickers in the windows and the rear window had a sticker that read "you are now playing chase the hyundai" so that says a lot about the guy who owned this before. These were swiftly removed. I also noticed when I got home that the driver's door doesn't lock on the button, which is a common actuator fault on all generations of coupe.

The air con smell hadn't disappeared, so the first thing for it was an air con bomb from eurocarparts and a new air freshener. I then pulled the pollen filter, as the "full service history" was actually not stamped since 2014, and I figured this would be a bit minging:

I was absolutely right. This thing stinks! I've binned it and running without a cabin filter until I can get a replacement in the week. The smell has improved dramatically already.

Next up, the exhaust blow. Got it up in the air and the problem was immediate - the flexi has disconnected:

There's a right way to fix this and then there's the way I'm going to fix this - cut it out with an angle grinder and clamp in a universal flexi from ebay for about £25 laugh

I've sourced a door actuator which will hopefully be with me in the week, and it will get a service next week as it currently has about half a litre too much black oil in it. Cambelt sticker shows 2009 / 60k miles ago (currently on 102k). It wants a set of tyres at some point but these are fine for now.

Regarding the actual car: these drive incredibly well, despite the hate they get online. It's a very torquey motor and it pulls very well in all gears and corners like it's on rails. I've not managed to upset it yet even in the damp, miserable conditions over the weekend. For ~~ £500 it's an excellent shed and has definitely satisfied my urges to make a terrible decision, for at least a couple of weeks laugh

It may even see some time on track, I'm that impressed with it (and I don't care if I bin it!).

tl;dr Specs:

  • 2.7L V6
  • 6 speed manual
  • 102k miles
  • Fully stamped until 2014
  • Electric windows, sunroof, mirrors
  • Air con, cruise control, climate control
  • Reverse parking sensors
  • Bright yellow
  • MOT til June

Looks like a great shed, I like the ‘find anywhere’ yellow and the fact that no one has actually pissed in the car... laugh
Might be cheap to fix up too

Good shed! thanks for sharing.

Not to knock, but I find the underbonnet view hilarious. Hyundai have attempted to style the plastic engine cover as if the engine is mounted longitudinally, with the lines down the centre and the silver bars as if they are intake runners ... but the whole thing is obviously mounted off-centre, as usual for a transverse engine, so it just looks weird. Still, for £525 with a V6, you can't complain!

Always had a bit of a soft spot after I drove one on a video game somewhere and it appeared to be ludicrously rapid for what it was. Good looking and cheap as chips. Looking forward to more on this!

Hell of a shed! Even got me looking on eBay, found this very nice example someone has spent at least thirty pounds ruining. Fortunately it's 'subtle and not 'in yer face!''

Had one of these about 5 years ago as a summer runabout really underrated car great fun to drive with a lovely V6 roar when you gave it some stick, only downside was getting nicked for speeding it was deceptively quick!

Always loved the way the gen 2 coupe looked, pre and post facelift. Think it was among the nicest coupes available at the time. Also, that yellow is quite something, never seen one in it before.

A guy in my mother's street had one when I was a teenager with some sort of performance exhaust. I've had several 6 cylinder cars since then, but none sounded as good. Glad to hear the power isnt as lacking as the reviews and figures made out. And at the price you paid, this is a definite bargain.

Look forward to seeing updates!

Glad I'm not the only nerd who noticed that nerd

Appreciate the positivity! I wish the missus shared the same enthusiasm. She won't even look at it. Apparently I'm letting the driveway down (which given I had a bare shell of a 309 on axle stands on the driveway for a year, is a real statement...) laugh

As much as I loved the v6 burble that came from only having half an exhaust, it did need fixing, mostly just to try and reclaim the 1-2mpg it may account for. Plus no one else would be stupid enough to buy it with a snapped exhaust biggrin

The thing to know about the v6 is that aftermarket exhaust parts DO NOT EXIST. The middle section with the flexi attached has a cat on it and is NFP from Hyundai, and the angle of the pipes meant that cutting it out and using a universal clamp on solution wasn't an option.

The first garage I took it to wanted to remove the section from the car and weld a new flexi in on the bench. The second garage, an exhaust specialist, supplied and welded a 2.25" flexi for £120. More than I wanted to spend on this fix, but I wasn't queuing up to try and tackle this job on axle stands given how crap the access is.

So now I have a solid exhaust, however it's mouse quiet. I miss the roar laugh

Also, none of the pollen filters listed by Euros are correct for this car, so I have to order one online.

Total spend so far: £650
