Help with car noise please!
Discussion
I brought a bmw 1 series 115D and on every cold start it makes a noise for around 5 minutes before going silent and i wont hear it again until next cold start.
I have 6 months warranty with it so just want to make sure everything is ok whilst i’m covered.
Any help appreciated

Yes mate it is a squeak type noise, the belt as in the cam belt? Any course for concern?
Thanks
More likely an auxiliary belt (runs the power steering, air-con, water pump etc). It should be looked at as it will most likely be a bearing on one of the idlers going. If it seizes, then the belt will slip or snap leaving you stranded. Thanks

I'm not up on my BMW's but I think you have a B38 engine and therefore a camchain not belt? Chains tend to rattle when worn (which yours is unlikely to be) not squeak so relax on that front. Thanks
You could open up the bonnet, look for the belt run......some pointers, there is always one of the pulleys that's a tensioner and that can wobble/oscillate a tiny bit the rest should be rock solid and smooth with the engine running. The belts grooved/ridged side can get cracks across the peaks which can be a sign of age/wear and it might need replacement.
On an old car you could just remove the belt for a quick startup and see if it goes, then you can rule in/out all the pulleys/ancillaries in the belt run. It would probably go and then you could check for roughness in all the pulleys etc to find the culprit.
A bit of talc powder on the belt might help, it might not go completely but any change again at least points you towards something on the belt run.
