Deals before/after 20 plate
Discussion
I’m looking at buying a new car but wasn’t looking to actually purchase until April/May for one reason or another. I’m looking at a large 4x4 as I’m based in ritual England and work in agriculture. I’m fortunate enough to be able to buy outright so I’ve been offered some heavily discounted 69 reg cars in advance of the 1st March for the 20 plate release from dealer and manufacturer stock vehicles.
My question is, am I best to grab these deals now? Will these pre-reg vehicles disappear immediately once the new 20 plate is released or is it the usual hyperbole?

Deals change every quarter depending on manufacturer promotions and how desperate dealers are to shift metal to hit their targets.
One key thing to be aware of - car tax will be based on Wltp figures from 1st April, and as this is typically a higher figure, tax on initial purchase price will go up. This will particularly hit SUVs. Company car benefit in kind figures would also change as a result.
Dealers may therefore want to shift as much stock before 1st April that they can, or they might pre reg lots on March 30th knowing they can sell it cheaper versus new after 1st April and there could be a glut of cars to deal on.
In short, you roll the dice and take a risk on potentially waiting for a better deal that might not come. Personally when the right car comes up at the right price, I’d just buy it.
