Sudden sharp stabbing pain in sole of foot, and frozen toes
Discussion
Hi, what could be wrong with my feet?
First problem, an intense and sudden stabbing pain in the mid sole or "inside" the foot above the sole. Can happen any time of day when sitting or walking and also night when just lying in bed, with shoes on or without, and lasts maybe 20 seconds before going away. But is intensely painful when it happens, to the point of absolutely having to stop doing anything I'm doing until it goes away. Seems to be getting more frequent and more painful. Mostly just my right foot but occasionally, with less pain, my left foot.
Did wonder about plantar fasciitis but the pain is always around the sole or embedded in the centre of my foot rather than the heel, and doesn't really have any trigger like just getting out of bed.
I am diabetic type 2 and did use to have neuropathy over the full soles of both feet but after five years work getting blood sugar levels under control and two years work with a podiatrist rubbing back crusty skin and almost daily foot cream we have restored feeling to my immediate soles now (to the surprise of some medics). So could it just be similar previous nerve damage manifesting in a different way and if so anything I can do to stop it hurting so much?
Second problem, all my toes feel "frozen" or "numb", especially my big toe, again on my right foot, and that particular toe is a bit "scrunched up". No swelling or pain and I can bend them all OK, just some irritation from the constant "numb" feeling. Podiatrist was wondering about gout, which I mentioned to my GP who said no to that since there is no real pain just irritation. Is it just diabetic neuropathy again?
I have worn excellent Brooks running shoes or equivalent virtually every day since working with this podiatrist for the last two years so don't think I can blame footwear.
Thanks for any ideas or tips!

The type of pain your are describing sounds like neuropathy healing. Nerves repairing themselves and misfiring.
May I ask how you are achieving your glucose control? If it's insulin and/or insulin-stimulating medicines then it could be worsening neuropathy. If it's diet and/or Metformin then I imagine it will be nerves healing, as previously mentioned.
