Next jan unfortunately, if it was built 31/12/79 it would be qualifed for no tax now.

It's based on build date, and it's 40 years before the January of the year concerned, rolling up in April.

So right this minute the car would need to be built before January 1979.

In April it will roll up to mean being built before January 1980.

But your car wasn't built before January 1980, it was built in January 1980, so will not be caught by this.

Instead you need to wait until the rule rolls over to "Before January 1981", which will be in April next year.

My van is a UK registered import and the date of first registration is 01/01/1980. Will this be exempt this year?

I know they used to treat anything registered in the first week of January as being taken to have been built the previous year, so if that's still in effect (which I believe it is), yes, I think it should be.

Does it show an earlier manufacture date on the V5C? If it does, it might already be exempt. VED exemption is based on the date of manufacture, rather than the date of registration, though anything first registered after 1976 or 1977 was supposed to be declared "new at first registration" in order to get a new reg. People discovering that their 1981 car was built in 1979 and wanting to get that on the V5C for early VED exemption can find that they get a new age-related registration, but if your van already has the date of manufacture on it, you might be OK.

I've just noticed it says "Declared manufactured 1980" in the special notes on the front page of the V5C. It is on SORN at the minute but I think I'll try at the post office when I put it back on the road and see what they say. Thanks for the responses guys.

If it's noted as manufactured in 1980, then I would say April 2021 will be the magic date for you. April this year is when vehicles made before 1st Jan 1980 become exempt, so barring any changes, the year after is when those made during 1980, or before 1st Jan 1981, get there.

That seems odd. Registered 01/01/1980, but built in 1980?

One of those things can't be correct.

Guess see if it lets you declare it a historic vehicle come April.

The guy I bought it off did the paperwork to register it and get a UK registration number. He told me he’d put the date of first registration as 01/01/1980 on the form. The year of manufacturer is in the special notes where it states the vehicle has been imported. I don’t know where that bit of information comes from.
Like you say, I’ll find out in April.

My Mk2 Jaguar was first registered in January 1963 and recognised as such by DVLA. The last Mk2 (actually 240) were made in 1969. In spite of all that, when I applied for a new V5C, DVLA insisted on a heritage certificate to prove it was manufactured more than 40 years ago.
