Marine/nautical charts
Discussion
Hello all,
I am looking for an online resource where I can print off charts. I'm aware of plenty of sites where I can look at and print terrestrial maps for free but cannot find any marine/nautical resources.
Specifically I am looking for something with a good scale, similar to a OS Explorer type map and I want it to show topography, particularly where the depth is shaded in light to dark blue.
This isn't for use in plotting or route planning, but instead for a piece of artwork.
Many thanks

Some of these are put of date but would be ideal for your purposes: www.visitmyharbour.com most of the UK coastal charts.
https://www.charts.noaa.gov/ChartCatalog/MapSelect... has all the US charts on it, they are less colourful (grey for land) but cover some interesting places - there's an option for PDF downloads
Charts are really interesting to take some time looking at, there is a huge amount of information on them! Some of the current charts were first printed in the 19th century and have barely changed since - if you can find them some of the ones around the Bahamas are great, but I doubt they'll be available online

Not sure about printing, but if you get yourself on any of the sailing forums, you can usually find people selling out of date charts.
Let me guess...papering the downstairs loo, or a 3D relief picture?
Was considering buying a few out of date charts to get going. Haha don't fancy wallpapering, but a 3D picture sounds good. Its for some artwork whereby the fish will be made from cutouts of the chartsLet me guess...papering the downstairs loo, or a 3D relief picture?

I'm still struggling with any free sources though, they don't even need to be in date.
The owner (David Store) of https://www.dsnmltd.com/ is a real Piston Head and can provide any charts that you require.
You will not find any free nautical charts online, only the odd small area on relevant websites showing race marks etc, even these wont be sufficient quality to get good resolution print. Reason being you can only navigate accurately on exactly 1:1 scale, otherwise you wont be where you think you are. I have scanned and printed 1:1 (in a shipyard) a local chart for noting fishing wrecks etc, but I understand this is heavily frowned upon. Using out of date paper charts is fine and the only way, my boy has Falmouth and its approaches on his bedroom wall - looks great.

He wants to cut them into fish shapes, from which I surmised the bits didn't need to be very big.Simpo Two said:

You can screen grab Navionics: https://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en#boating@10&a...MB140 said:
How quick do you need them, I have a friend who was a navigator on our aircraft carriers. Still in the navy.
He probably has access to lots of old charts. He doesn’t work with me any more but is a very helpful bloke. I could ask him if you don’t need them urgently.
No rush, just for a future art projectHe probably has access to lots of old charts. He doesn’t work with me any more but is a very helpful bloke. I could ask him if you don’t need them urgently.
