If PCP had been available 40 years ago.....

What cars would you have bought.
40 years ago I was driving MG's, Triumph sports cars, progressed to Peugeot 205 GTI's, Golf GTI's etc. Most purchased with a bank loan. The more exotic stuff was unavailable due to affordability. With PCP, PCH, Balloon payments, small deposits and car finance making much more expensive cars affordable today. What cars would you have bought 40/50 years ago. Me probably Lotus Elan, Porsche 944, TVR, cars in this category were always just outside what I could afford.

In my early 20s i was driving an MG Metro followed by a lightly modded Fiesta 1.4S. I guess i'd have went with a new XR2 or XR3i or maybe an Escort RS Turbo.40 years ago I was driving MG's, Triumph sports cars, progressed to Peugeot 205 GTI's, Golf GTI's etc. Most purchased with a bank loan. Mileage covered and insurance costs would probably have been the limiting factor for me though.
Great question OP.
I would have had a Lancia Integrale, like the ones I use to look at Mike Spence Motorsport all the years ago. I know that wasn't 40 years ago but hey! They were lovely but financially unobtainable at the time. The Triumph Stag would've been car I lusted for prior to getting my driving licence.

RS200, local dealer had one in the showroom for ages, i gave it very serious thought
They where cheap enough but i was doing some house renovation and stuck with the cosworths for monthly cash flow
Ford couldn’t shift them for ages. I seem to remember they wanted £15k for them (but only vaguely remembered). They where cheap enough but i was doing some house renovation and stuck with the cosworths for monthly cash flow
Doesn’t sound a lot but that would have been 1.5 Granadas.

Back then with the exception perhaps of the RS2000 most Fords seemed like cheap options because we couldn't afford Triumph Stags, TR6's, MG Roadsters and at the time always rated these 3 BL offerings over any Granada Cortina or Escort. At no time did I ever imagine some of these Fords being more desirable than an MG Roadster. You live and learn.

I know someone who used to work for Ford, when the RS200 project was happening. He reckons they had the bodies made by reliant, then delivered to Dagenham, and there they stayed, and were a pain in arse, because it was only a project to satisfy the homologation rules for Group B Rally, and they weren’t initially allowed to sell them on the general market, so the cars were just wheeled around the factory at random, and pretty much got in everyone’s way. That said, I would have loved to have one on PCP, if that was available back then.Doesn’t sound a lot but that would have been 1.5 Granadas.
