90mph in a 70 (motorway) - what to expect?

I hoped I'd never have to post this on here but ....
I've just had a NIP for 90 on a motorway.
What should I expect?
£100 fine and an SP50?
Court?
Speed awareness course?
Place your bets, or offer helpful advice as you see fit!

(Other details: First offence, been driving for 20+ years, clean licence, no reason to claim hardship.)

There is no standard answer to that. Do you have any popints already, what do you drive, what is your occupation, etc..?
It's over 10 years since I had points however it made no difference to my insurance and when I phoned the insurer to tell them of the points they said (pretty much) "We regard it as so easy to pick up 3 points these days for doing something that you're not aware of that we don't bother with the first 3 points". YMMV

Difference I noticed on the comparison sites was the amount of companies quoting low had reduced. Definitely less to choose from than with no points.

You used to be able to cruise at 90mph on the motorway without fear of prosecution or penalty.
Just lift off when passing a panda car, so as not to take the pi55.
And I don't want to hear, oh but the roads are so much busier now. They always were busy, in which case you were forced to knock back your speed until it cleared.

Okay, how about "there are so many more sh!te drivers now" ?
I *personally* feel that as cars are way safer than when the 70mph limit was originally imposed, the motorway limit should be 80-90 (as per France - 130km/h), reduced in heavy rain to 70 (France - 110km/h).....but again, there are plenty of awful drivers who are far more likely to cause trouble than the 'busier roads".
BTW, roads are busier now, however much you don't want to hear it.
Hence the woeful 'SMART Motorways" which offer even more opportunities to die
OP, yes, standard SP50, fine, 3pts. Most insurance companies shouldn't make too much of it until you get more, but YMMV.....
About 10 years ago, on an almost empty M3 Hants at night I passed a car at 87 on cruise. As I cleared it to pull back in the silly bugger had accelerated up on the inside closer to me which would have not left enough gap for him, so I gave a small squirt to clear him and pull back in. Then his blue lights in the grille came on.
92mph was 3 points and a fine. 87 would probably have been the same I guess. Hopefully still the same now.

Similar story for me. Was passing some cars on the A33 at about 80mph. An Omega comes barrelling up behind me, so I put my foot down so as to complete the pass and pull over so he can get past. But instead he pulls in behind me and then on come the hidden blues. Was done for about 90mph. Ah, the good old days.92mph was 3 points and a fine. 87 would probably have been the same I guess. Hopefully still the same now.

Agree, speed limit on motorway should be raised in my opinion, can’t just make rules for the iffy drivers.by the way; be careful in France, I got stopped this year for being 41 kph over the limit ( 80 ), automatic on the spot 2 months ban.

Thanks. Slightly sobering to think that I was 6mph off being summonsed. (An aside but I looked at my speedo the moment I was flashed and it said 87. I am 100% sure of this and the speedo is accurate to GPS. I know that this argument won't get me anywhere but it's slightly galling none the less.)

If the limit was raised people would do 10%+2 more than that because that’s what they already do. If it was 80 people would do 90, if it was 90 they’d do 100, etc. You know it, I know it.
If you set cruise for 80 you’re probably never going to gave a problem, so there is already leeway.
This leeway is never enough though, which makes raising the limit redundant.

That may be true but you could use the same argument to lower the speed limit to anything you like. 60mph max on motorways? Come to think about it, what's wrong with 40?
