...but it will happily bump start 100% of the time.

Its got a new battery, as i thought that might not be holding quite enough charge, and it did start immediately after the change but not since.

I then realised i wasn't hearing the fuel pump prime on ignition so bought a 2nd hand fuel pump relay. Fitted that - still wont fire.

I'm at a bit of a loss now...!

Got a spark whilst cranking? Possible the coil is losing its supply when key is in start position.

Sounds worth a look. How would I check... simply pull the plug and look for spark while cranking?

Though if the coil was knackered, presumably it would struggle to spark when it's running too?

Your issue appears to be 100% battery related.

You have a new battery but have you PROPERLY removed, cleaned & checked ALL of the high current + & - connections for the alternator, battery, engine & starter?

I had this, turned out to be bad HT leads and plugs.

I used to work on 205GTI`s back in their day,As your car bump starts there is nothing wrong with the engine and ignition system. Its a long time ago for me, but My memory tells me something about the tachometric fuel pump relay, sometimes called the safety relay. Its tucked away on the right hand side of the steering (RHD).
May be worth trying ??
