30 in a temporary 20

I managed to get through a flooded road section, only to find the road ahead was closed—with no signage providing an alternative route. I tried taking a small back lane but found that road was also closed, again with no signs indicating a diversion.

Eventually, I ended up on a main road, passing two large temporary 40 mph signs, followed by two large 20 mph signs. In the distance, I could see roadworks. I pulled over to check for an alternative route to work, then continued up to the traffic lights and waited for them to turn green.

At this point, there was no clear indication of the speed limit (even at the lights), apart from the signs I had passed about 250 yards back. I proceeded forward, driving slowly past the workforce, and continued along the road. There were no speed limit signs at the lights or anywhere along the bridge.

As I was driving, I clearly saw a very large ‘30 mph’ painted on the road, along with two 30 mph signs further back (which I later confirmed in photos).

It was only when I spotted a speed van hidden behind a works vehicle next to the 30 mph signs that I remembered passing the 20 mph signs about 1/3 of a mile back—at which point I thought, *oh ***!

So, essentially, the only visible speed markings in the entire zone were:

• A huge, clearly visible ‘30 mph’ painted on the road
• Two 30 mph signs positioned behind the speed van

Would I have any grounds to argue this?

I’ve seen one of these on a motorway in roadworks and wondered if they were legit and enforceable.

Are you sure, because the website you linked describes it as capturing private drivers via anpr, and occasionally submitting footage to the local plod. It’s purpose seems to be to get the public to drive safely past sites, rather than to monitor the road workers themselves.

Are you sure, because the website you linked describes it as capturing private drivers via anpr, and occasionally submitting footage to the local plod. It’s purpose seems to be to get the public to drive safely past sites, rather than to monitor the road workers themselves.

The way I read it is to capture site traffic speed and capture road users entering the site.

Even if they send it to plod, its hardly going to be counted as legit evidence.

Eg taken by Bob the driver who isn't 'trained' on a device that isn't certified.

Private video footage has been used to prosecute drivers and there is no requirement that their devices are certified. Evidence is evidence.

Devices are certified so courts can accept their evidence without recourse to experts every time. That doesn't mean a non-certified device cannot provide evidence.

I drove through roadworks with one of those exact same vans on Thursday and was confused as I was sure there wasn't a single speed limit change in place so couldn't understand why it was there.

I drove through the same roadworks yesterday and was double-checking and again no signs at all but the van was still there.

I never for a moment thought it was checking the road workers.
