Which estate 8k? Reliable, MPG, comfort

Hi guys,
My cars just sold so I need to buy something sharpish.
I’ve narrowed my list down to;
Honda Civic tourer 2014/15 1.6 diesel in SR Spec Or
VW Passat estate 14/15, 1.6/2.0
Where would you put your money if priorities were reliable, cheap to run, 60+ mpg on a motorway and comfortable (soft suspension)
I’m not a fan of the obvious answers like the focus/Astra or anything French.
Please give me some pointers as I’m really struggling.

Honda's are great but dont expect a supple ride. Good handling and incredibly reliable. Can be quite crashy over anything other than perfectly smooth surfaces. As a point I own two CRV's, sold a '58 Civic last week, old man a '14 CRV, Sis in Law a '14 Civic and FIL a '15 Civic. I drive them all regularly.
I've sat in one of those Astra Elite's and it's a nice place to be. The only real negatives I had were cheap feeling buttons and poor noise suppression.
I would personally go for (Well, I did..) something like this:

I find it's a quieter drive and the buttons feel a bit more quality. On a motorway run, my 2013 6 with 158k on the clock managed ~220 miles on a quarter of a tank 2 up with holiday luggage and manages a reported 47mpg on stop-start commuting traffic. Just be careful, the 150BHP models are £30 tax but the fruitier 175BHP cars are £125 tax per year (despite being the same engine!).

We've got an 11 Civic and I'd agree with this. Also have the 11 Accord estate which by comparison is a great motorway car but feels heavy when hooning aroundGassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
