Maybe not related , but I just moved from Wanadoo to NTL for my broadband and now whenever I start the computer the Norton firewall doesn't start like it used to and this now seems to stop me signing into MSN and viewing the ' my ebay ' page on ebay.
Open the Norton firewalland its tells me it's off but there's nothing to turn it on or anything . I used to get an icon on the bottom of the screen which I could click on and turn off the firewal if needed, but that's not there too.

Any help or ideas would be great.

Cheers

I'd be inclined to say that you have some malware on your machine..

Try downloading and using the MS Anti Spyware app and see if that finds any nasties.. (if you're not already of course)..

Best of british!

What I dont get is why you just can't turn the damn firewall on and solve the problem. Am I missing something here? it tells me the firewall is of and needs my urgent attention but won't let me do a thing ! aghhhhh

A trojan on your machine could be forcing the firewall's hand and stopping it from launching..

Many viruses/trojans exhibit behaviour of this nature to allow them to continue being able to contact the outside world...

Ouch

Make sure any analogue modems are unplugged from the wall, I repeat, make sure any analogue modems are unplugged from the wall!!!!

You need to run the fix for all that, then run a full AV scan with up to date signatures, and then a double check with spybot or something similar.

It's messy

Bliarout is completely correct...

Unplug your modem (not BB, that one will be ok) and get scanning/disinfecting/fixing...

Best of british..

Just logging in here and posting is about my limit with computers.I'm with NTL now and there's the modem for that ( which you say is fine ? ) and before that it was a broadband modem with Wanadoo. I haven't used dial-up in about 2 years.
So can I just get all those files up and delete them or what ? Forgive my lack of any knowledge with this , but when the Norton Anti Virus self checks it's self once a week , it comes back and says everything is hunky-dory.

pop to Trend's Housecall page --> http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and run their AV system...

You may well find that Housecall finds more viruses than Norton...

Just deleting the files may well not work, as a lot of trojans are capable of replicating themselves, or will have processes running that will stop the files from being deleted.
