KEEPER worth KEEPING??!!

I have been debating with myself for a couple of years now whether or not to buy the car I would consider to be my ‘keeper’. The car I’m thinking of is a Porsche 997 Turbo. Budget probably being about £45K. Problem being now.. if I buy the car, what is going to happen to it’s value in the next decade or so with the ICE vehicles being alienated (maybe). It won’t happen in my life time but I don’t want to leave my son a fastidiously maintained piece of worthless Pork! 
1) Surely if it’s a keeper, future value shouldn’t be too much of a concern
2) Although there may be a slight premium to pay for those who wish to enjoy them, there will always be a place in the world for interesting ICE cars. I would hope that your future 997 turbo purchase will probably fit into that category.

No... not an investment at all , I love the cars and it would be enjoyed and maintained to the highest standard. My worry would be, giving my son a car that would no longer worth anything or even worse ... illegal i.e. petrol cars forbidden! You can have them but only to look at! Petrol and diesel cars will be around for many years yet and I would wager your son will still be able to drive and get enjoyment from it when you pass it on.
Why does the value matter to him if you are giving it for free?
Buy it for your enjoyment first and foremost, anything beyond this is a bonus.

The value matters because I may as well keep the 911 I have now, rather than invest an additional £25K on a Turbo (basically improved ICE) if petrol cars are to become ‘extinct’ anyway. Petrol and diesel cars will be around for many years yet and I would wager your son will still be able to drive and get enjoyment from it when you pass it on.

No.. you obviously have a totally different agreement with your wife than I do with mine, ( hope she doesn’t read this when I’m asleep ) that isn’t the case. I have a perfectly good 911. Let's assume for the sake of argument that all IC cars will be legislated off the road and worthless in 2040.The question then is, would you rather spend the next 20 years driving a Carrera, or a Turbo ?

However you seem to be very pessimistic so I would stick with what you have got and waste the £25k on something else you can enjoy.
Or maybe say to yourself, I can spend £25k and drive the car I will enjoy for at least another 25 years or so and then hand it on to your son who can then enjoy it for the next 25 years or so after that.

Agreed. All this panicking because you won't be able to buy a NEW fossil fuel powered car from 2035 is nonsense. The vast majority of cars on the road today will be worth very little by 2035 anyway because of depreciation and wear and tear.It's highly unlikely any government will introduce a cliff edge where all ICE cars are banned form the road. It would unfairly penalize the poorest in society (those most likely to be running around in an old ICE banger) and be a massive vote loser.
Get a Turbo bought and enjoy every mile!
So in 2040 the powers that be suggest that there won't be any new petrol or diesel cars sold (apparently), they aren't going to shut up petrol station forecourts overnight to the millions of ICE cars that are already on the road.
On a positive flip side to this, rather than the used car market disappearing for ICE cars it may have the opposite effect and the used market maybe extremely buoyant for all the people who can't afford/don't want a new car or indeed don't want an electric car.

Trust me, I won’t be WASTING £25K whichever decision I eventually take. I’m not an idiot... just getting opinions from others.However you seem to be very pessimistic so I would stick with what you have got and waste the £25k on something else you can enjoy.

I think a BMW i8 is a sensible choice for you.
I don't think they'll lose much more in the short-term, and in the medium-term the whole world is moving in their direction.
In 20 years it'll still look like a spaceship, and consider the values of M1, Z1 and Z8. Very secure places for your money.

It’s not about the brand Jim, it’s about the ICE. I already have a 911. It’s weather it’s worth upgrading or stick with what I have . A 911 EV will be just on the horizon. I certainly wouldn’t be moving to a BMW.... no disrespect. Anyway decision made, sticking with what I’ve got for now. Better the devil you know & all that.
