I'm actually looking for my daughter who is 7, well used to using a tablet.

She currently has an 8 inch Galaxy Tab A (T280) with 8gb storage and as most kids she uses it for Youtube and Netlfix and the odd game here and there along with a couple of apps for school.

The main issue with the tablet is the lack of storage being 8gb, it's getting borderline impossible now to install more than 4 decent apps without running out of storage. I have looked into rooting it thinking in doing so I could delete some of the pre installed apps which are on there unused to clear space but I cannot find a root for this model of tablet so that seems a dead end.

So ideally would like a 8 inch tablet as the size suits her, running on Android with 16gb plus storage, budget upto £150 but the cheaper the better.

I wonder if the Pistonheads knowledge can suggest any of the less well known models or makes that are surprisingly good?

I thought these had a slot for a MicroSDXC card - should help if the only issue is lack of space (and you remember to change the default install location to this).

You might be able to add an SD card but it's unlikely to help much. 8GB once all the overheads are taken off doesn't leave much and it's just not enough these days.

I bought an Amazon HD8 tablet 32GB on a warehouse deal for less than £50, it's no iPad but it works great for the money.

Not everything can be moved to a micro sd card though. That;s a problem I have with my tablet which only has 8gb and I regularly have to delete things.

Since the OP is going to the trouble of replacing personally I'd try to get 32 gig or even 64.

And remember any apps installed on an SD card get put back into main storage if they are updated, so you have to manually move them back onto the SD Card.

Always best to look at the bigger internals like you say for all apps and things and just use an SD card for music/videos and photo storage.

Beware Amazon tablets- they don't run google maps and don't have the proper Youtube app.

You can work around both, but when i replace mine I'll choose a different brand.

I've been looking myself recently but there doesn't seem much to choose from. I wanted to replace my Galaxy Tab S2 - but that seems higher spec than most of the 8" tablets you can buy now.

It's a bit overbudget but the base new iPad 2019 is a great device for the price. It's £245 on ebay.

Apple have worldwide warranties, doesn’t matter where it was purchased, they service anywhere as long as it’s within date.

Thanks for all the input all, the Samsung at £100 with 32gb looks ideal for the price.

I've tried moving apps to the SD card but very few apps can be moved to SD so.its made no real difference.

Thanks again.

I think you'll find that only applies if bought through official Apple channels.

The ebay seller of this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2019-Apple-iPad-Wi-Fi-3...

for example is very upfront about the lack of Apple warranty:

In actuality they don’t though. As long as it’s within the service period they do what needs doing.

I’ve had several iPhone repairs under warranty where bought outside the authorised retail channels with zero issues in the UK and US.

Latest example, I bought my XSMax from a market in Hong Kong. The screen packed up in Florida last summer and it was sorted at the Florida Mall Apple store, same day FOC, zero questions asked. It was within the warranty period.

The work around being, just open them in the browser? coz that's what I do... not really a 'work around' is it.

up until recently google and amazon were having a spat and refused to support each others apps, but they have made amends and things should be getting sorted.

As for a tablet for a 7yo a fire tablet will be fine, for a child id buy the cheapest thing I could find, it'll just end up getting smashed, stood on dunked, dragged, thrown anyway. My GF has to get new screens for her kids ipads ever other month..

In the case of Google maps, yes. In the case of Youtube, there is a Amazon Youtube app, which I strongly suspect is just a skinned browser, but has the drawback of not supporting casting to a Roku or similar.

How big a deal this is is up to you, but the OP is sorted now anyway.

good stuff, really liking mine, the dolby atmos makes the sound pretty decent for watching films.

the only big drawback I've found on it sofar - it doesn't support casting.. which is one of the main reasons i got one - none of the reviews mentioned it either.

if it's only for your kid i doubt that's a issue - but worth anyone else bearing in mind.

Battery life seems excellent sofar though.

I'm not sure what Atmos really means in the context of tablets. I would imagine it only applies to the headphone output, because the speakers are hardly going to be the highest of fi!
