Whilst chatting with a friend about Christmases past, we suddenly had a violent disagreement. Nobody was injured, but the atmos became tense, bitter and, if I'm honest, a little awkward.

Forget that it's only February, this needs to be put to PH and the decision reached shall be followed in ten months time.

The question is:

Do you wait until after the Queens speech to open presents - or do you open them as soon as practically possible in the morning.

I know which I vote for, but am keen not to influence the jury.

My wife would sneak down and open them in the night so I have to hide them, we have no kids and have never watched the Queen's speech.

Where's the what is Christmas option? What are these so called presents that you speak of? hehe

Like most days in the year, the only thing I look forward to is opening my bowels for a nice relaxing poo. (Copyright Reeves and Mortimer.)

Presents are how you gauge how much you are liked... for example:

1. Socks. They don't care.
2. Sweater. They care a bit, but have no imagination.
3. Complicated electronic gadget or toy. They love you. A lot.

This is how presents should be received and judged in a normal relationship.

I know it's been wet and boring recently, but rowing about Christmas in February is a bit odd.

We used to wait until after church but since my mum died and she was the only one interested we now open them mid morning after breakfast and everyone's up and dressed. Waiting until after the queen's speach seems a bit unnecessary.

Couldn’t care less about the ramblings of the monarchy. Open presents first thing when we all get up.

We don't watch the Q's speech.

Once all the meal preparation is complete and the dog is walked.

Always watch the Queens speech. Some presents in the morning with some kept for the afternoon for both adults and children.

Children's presents in the morning. Adults after lunch. I have stayed with relatives who have combined the opening times, and the chaos has been quite fun.

The results are illuminating.

I seem to be winning the point....

My last poll was 'Should You Stuff Your Dog When It Dies?' Another very important discussion was had.

My brother in law insists on openings after lunch is completed and cleared away. No way would I bother with that st. Open as soon as conscious. And I've never come across anyone who watches the Queen do her annual thing.

Personally I think forcing your kids to wait until after anything is just cruel! Challenge is making sure they dont wake you up at 3am to "see if Santa's been".
We've always opened once everybody is up, and whilst mostly watching my son open his we combine opening everybody's.
Bit different now his mum is my ex, he has presents with his mum xmas day, and then again with me on boxing day. Seems to work fine as he does pretty well out of it.

Queens speech? I had enough of that malarkey when married!

Open as soon as possible as it's always booze.

Presents after lunch.

Kids have presents from Santa to keep them amused up to that point.

I feel that we may have been separated at birth, although I’m ambivalent about the monarchy, but I’ve never been ar*ed enough to listen to the speech.
As for opening presents, I keep putting it off, until eventually the enemy puts a gun to my head, and I have to feign joy at yet another bottle of Armagnac, or Grey Goose vodka. xmas

I wake my kids up every Christmas morning but have been banned from doing it till 6am.
5:30 I'm up and creeping about, lighting the fire, making hot chocolate sorting out the presents then wake the kids on the dot at 6.
They open their presents turn about, one at a time till they are done then my wife and I do the same. We're allowed one chocolate bar each before breakfast then we have a big fry up then a family walk then back for late lunch. Never watch the queen, she's just another stranger to me, not relevant at all on what is a special family day for us.
My kids are 23 and 25, but we maintain the traditions we've had since they were born.

I can't do the poll as we no longer do Xmas presents. Xmas is spent on holiday abroad where it's nice and warm. No kids and no relations means we can happily skip the farce that is presents. If I did, I would open them after breakfast.
