New car need for 65 year dad - Help
Discussion
Hi All,
My dad has asked me to find a replacement for his BMW X3 20d 2013.
His requirements are:
SUV/cross-over type vehicle
Auto gearbox
Space for the grand kids and gold clubs (not at the same time)
Built in Sat Nav
Economical to run
He is not a petrol head and knows very little about cars.... but I've always got him nice cars nice cars, previous cars:
BMW 730d Msport Black/Black
BMW 530d SE Baritz Blue/Cream
VW Golf TDI
VW Passat TDI
So, his budget is £15-20k and knowing him, he probably wants as new as possible.
Initially I was thinking (2015-2017):
BMW X3
BMW X1
VW Tuguan
To stick with premium German brands but then I got thinking......
How about a new or 1 year old:
Kia SUV with 6 years remaining warranty
MG ZS SUV with 6 years remaining warranty
Hyundai SUV with 4 years remaining
Has anyone gone from a 6-7 year old BMW and felt short-changed with one of the above cars?
The reviews are very positive and they look OK'ish, have all the tech and specification.
Help needed.

I'd say these three are where you should consider looking they're well spec'd with a high level of fit & finish which is on par with the German offerings with a spec that is hard to match, whilst still being a clear step above the more mainstream options.

I don't know how the quality compares to the X3 but have you had a look at qashqais? I know a few people who have them now and rate them highly.
Got a pal with one perhaps 3-4 years old: tells me the quality is awful!I’ve had a 2014 XC60 D4 SE Nav from new, and can’t imagine many more comfortable seats to be sat in....you should take him to try one. I personally never found bmw seats that good, BUT he might prefer them
The 8-speed auto is super smooth: the older D5 was pretty agricultural when I tested one. That said, the D5 gets 4wd, mine is FWD (still gets up to ski resorts with winter tyres, and on one occasion, chains!)
Only thing to watch with the D4 engine is the “VEA check engine light EGR . Volvo have issued recalls - mine has just been called in: I’ve not had any problems (~80k miles in), but clearly some have.
Aside from my raving about Volvo comfy seats....if he likes his X3, I’d look at a more recent one of the same! Lexus always get great reviews too....
