Morning all,

I live in Frankfurt; my mum lives in the UK.

When I visit it would be convenient to (legally) drive her car.

Her insurer won’t insure me as a named driver on her policy as I am not a UK resident.

Any of you know an insurer who will, or is there a way round this?

You will have a better chance of getting your German based insurance to cover it as an extension to your current policy than set up a non residential car insurance.

My FIL does this when he comes over from Cyprus so it is possible. It must be cheaper than a rental too or he wouldn’t do it!

Swap her UK policy to someone like Hiscox and she can specify herself having fully comprehensive insurance cover for any driver, as well as her being fully comp any vehicle. That's what we have and it's very handy at times.

Thanks all for the advice so far. It looks like Saga might work - just waiting for a reply from their online department.

OP is it true that German insurance covers any driver, and is there any restriction, eg EU Licence holders only?

Not sure but can find out! Both of our car policies are under my wife’s name.

We added my SIL for upto 90 days per policy year on my wife's policy with Privilege.
I'm guessing that the other companies in the group are similar - Privilege insurance policies are underwritten by U K Insurance limited (UKI), who owns the brands Privilege, Direct Line, Churchill and Green Flag.

All straightforward and not too expensive (in the end) - did it 2 years in a row. Only thing we had to watch for was the first year they were fine with 90days in one go - and thus 1 admin fee. The 2nd year they were insistent (2 separate calls to advisors) that it had to be done 30days at a time (and thus 3 admin fees) - however fortunately when i called a 3rd time to set-up that advisor had no trouble setting up as one 90day block.

Direct Line do. When my wife's brother visited us from Czech Republic we put him on the insurance.

Just get her to add you as a temporary driver to her policy for the duration.

I added my brother in law to my policy when he visited us. I had a choice of 7 days for no additional premium or a refund of premium for 10 days. Guess which option I chose?

Thread revival (ironically one where I tried to help others with a similar query) - as frustratingly I can't in 2023 find a way to do something that I've done successfully pre-2020!!!...

Need to add a temporary driver, visiting from overseas so non-UK - but full licence held for years and can bring International Driving Permit.

Unfortunately the current insurer (esure flex) does not do non-UK licence holder (and also not temp - although permanent would be fine, but not a route without a UK licence).

And all the short term insurers that I've tried on-line will not quote - either as it's not UK/Commonwealth, or not UK ex-pat.
Or some other reason - on Confused temp search still no quote when selecting "Full International" licence despite nothing high risk in car/value/address etc - even varying duration or different ages (just to test) results in no quote.

Any thoughts on currently where to get short term non-UK driver cover much appreciated.

Whilst the above question of recommendations for a current additional short term policy for a non-UK driver would be much appreciated if anyone knows of one?...
...as non of the insurers fro any of the current household cars will allow this, a "fun" alternative might be to buy a cheap temporary vehicle and add them to that. That relies on finding an insurer that allows permanent (or temporary) non-UK drivers. Does anyone have any current recommendations from recent experience?

I've tried a few random cars into confused etc and then from the results I've called the affordable insurers (that I've heard of) - but no joy yet. Recommendations?

It just to allow them to be mobile a few times a weeks to help both us and them - they don't actually need a vehicle (although can hire for a day if they need). Man-maths is wondering whether I could buy/run/dispose for only a small loss! If not I'll give up!
