About two months back I decided I needed to get healthier (following some health issues). I have cut out or massively cut down my consumption of:

Caffeine
Chocolate
Cakes
Crisps
(Al)Cohol

Ok. The last one was a bit forced but 5 Cs sounded better than four and an A!

I had a headache at the beginning owing to caffeine withdrawal but since then have overall felt much better. Have slept better and without dieting have lost 5 kg or more (haven’t weighed myself but can feel and see the difference).

Actually I could add another “C” in that I’ve been making an effort to chew my food much more before swallowing, both to help with digestion and also to slow my eating down as I’ve read (in New Scientist) that eating more slowly can help you eat less as you have a better chance of feeling full.

I’ve missed the booze on a couple of occasions - but that is more than compensated by not waking up feeling awful in the morning (as I’ve got older I’ve found that even having a few beers spoils my sleep and the next day).

Surprisingly I’ve even managed to enjoy decaf coffee. I’m currently drinking a decaf soy cappuccino - something I would probably have mocked a few months back!

I had a revelation a couple of months back. The coffee machine at work, from which I've been having far too many caffeine hits over the last few years, ran out of decaf. Half the menu disappeared, including the "Coffee" I've been having.

So it turns out I'd been zinging along on a completely imaginary caffeine high for the best part of half a decade. Decaf is absolutely fine, and has the benefit that when you do stumble across a 4 shot mega machia mocha latte you'll put a dent in the ceiling.

Be careful of soy. It's the quiet killer of the modern man.

Nothing wrong with caffeine- in moderation it’s actually got some benefits as has a couple of squares of dark chocolate a day!

I can’t stand the stuff and maybe I’m ignorant of the downside of it but haven’t people from
Asia eaten it for hundreds of years or more?

I've been getting that wrong. Big family bar of Cadbury Whole Nut from the freezer. Give it a whack and eat all the bits.
