Private plate/ DVLA

Help needed.
I have just sold my car. After making decision to sell, I sent my V5 off to change address.
Person buying car asked me to confirm I was owner. So I sent a pic of front of v5.
So V5 comes back with new address and a random name on it. Not person I am selling it to.
I ring Dvla but they were useless and wouldn’t discuss as not my name on the V5
So I put my private plate on retention. And awaited the paperwork.
I received a letter from DVLA saying I had to send retention paperwork back as it was issues in error.
So it seems my private plate has been taken by the this new person.
I have sent an email to DVLA. requesting an explanation.
So. The question is has anyone had a similar experience and do they have any helpful advice.
Really don’t want to lose my number plate.

First off it's not actually your number plate you have just bought the right to use it.
Second if you sold the car with the plate on (which it sounds like you did) you can no longer put it on retention as far as I am aware, You Should have put the Plate on retention before you sold the car.

Cylon is right ,the new owner of the car has no obligation to return "your" plate.

Should have sorted address change and retention well before offering it for sale.

Car was sold without plate.
The v5 was address changed, so I could put plate on retention. As soon as it arrived I did just that. But while we were negotiating price etc he added his name to v5

The car was sold during the address change. So car was bought with the new reg not my private plate.

Yes. The v5 came back to me with my address and this other persons name.
I rang and asked why. But they wouldn’t discuss because of different name.

Sorry mate none of this makes sense

When you sell the car you can do it all on line, or if you choose the old way where you give the new keeper the slip from the v5c and then you send it off with the new keepers signature and details filled in. What part of that didn’t you do?

As far as keeping your plate that should have been put on retention before doing any change of keeper on the v5c or you will lose the right to use the plate

My thinking is that the person has done the ownership transfer online using the picture of the V5 before the sale.

They now have the registration of the car in their name and can remove the number plate...for sale or retention by themselves...

He's saying the name is not the purchaser, but a random.

I thought that too though.

You could well be right, if that’s the case then I would think the op has a good case to go back to the Dvla and report that the change of keeper was done fraudulently by a 3rd party not by himself as the registered keeper at the time.

Have raised a complaint with DVLA this morning on phone and been asked to email all details i'm aware of.
So now i have to wait to see if it helps, or if I have lost my plate.

I am confused. The address change, picture of the V5, may be relevant. But first 2 questions when did you sell the car? When did you (try) to place it on retention?

DVLA work off a photocopy?

To do it online you just need Doc Ref numbers don't you?

You don't send people photos of docs. Seen people losing plates like this before where they have posted photos of retention certificates showing Doc Ref & somebody has done a plate transfer online using the Doc Refs.
