20k Mile Commuter Car Under 4k
Discussion
So, I've been offered a new job which sounds really exciting, the only downside is a 40 mile each way commute so around 20k miles a year.
It's 95% motorway and even with a bit of traffic is under 50 min. As I currently drive a T5 camper I don't want to throw loads of miles at it and suffer the cost of 40mpg and below.
The plan is to keep the van but get a 'qualiy' car that can get 60+mpg ( happy to sit at 65 mpg and cruise ) that is under £4k. Ideally 10 years old or under, and as low milage as possible. ( Fully expect it to be between 100 / 115k on the clock). Cheap tax would also be a benefit as it's our 3rd car.
So far the main contender is an E90 320d efficient dynamics. It should easily get the mpg,
£20 tax, bee comfy and the chain driven engine should help reduce servicing costs ( unless it implodes 😖 )
Alternatively I have seen some Passat's circa 2011 with the 140 blue motion. Personally not as 'cool' as the E90 but certainly an option.
Other I've seen are old golfs, mondeo's, Octavia non vrs ect.
Any advice on car to recommend or have owned ine past. Mpg is one of the main factors As if it's good enough compared to the camper it effectively pays for itself.
Thanks in advance

Astra diesel of circa 2015 vintage. Will be £30 a year tax, ex lease so probably full main dealer printout service history and a out 115k miles.
Loads on Ebay and AT between 3+4k. Would be my next go to for a cheap taxi. Will do your job with ease and not lose much in depreciation because it's done it all.
Wait for the '3 series Beemer all day long' boys to rock up now.

Thanks Tyre Smoke.
I hadn't thought of that option. It's certainly a way of getting a more 'modern' car.
Sadly I'm probably one of the beemer boys at heart. I've had other hatches in the past So it's more of a case of I'm almost set on a 320d ED and looking for reasons not to.
As I would be wanting to keep it a few years one concern with any car would be taking it to circa 180k. I'm not really bothered about resale as any car at this price taken to high miles is never going to be worth much.
Would even consider a 318d / 118d however i know people with them that average 50mpg which isn't really enough to justify.
