As a bit of a profile on me. In mid thirties, love tech and clearly cars but for sometime keeping up with the latest thing hasn't interested me at all.

I've got a Samsung S8+ which I've had since launch so nearly had it 3 years. Managed over that time to drop it so a year ago I had a new screen at £130 installed from an official Samsung repairer.

Anyway Vodafone keep trying me to upgrade. I was paying £65 ages ago now on a £30 rolling contract which gives me loads of data and Spotify. I do use a high level of data as I travel for work and have a slightly longer commute so Spotify, YouTube and Netflix's eat data.

Anyway. Why can't I justify £50-60 on a S10 or £75+ for a S20 nor £100 for a Samsung flip thingy? I can't see the value... What am I not getting.

Anyone help! Btw if you can give me a good reason I'd be up for paying as I'm not against it but the only thing I like is that Samsung z flippy thing but £2400 for a 2 year contract seems alot.....

If your phone works and you can still get updates there might be no realistic benefit in upgrading.

Have you considered a rolling contract "all you can eat" SIM?

Smarty or Three for example offer pretty much unlimited everything for £20/month with no commitment.

Presumably you've now paid for the 'phone? So you are now paying £30/month for a sim only contract. How much data do you get ofr £30?

Cheers,

Josh

I get 30gb with an entertainment package for 12 months or whenever I cancel if that comes first.

S8+ is still trucking along. Occasionally hanging up but worth another £1800... Nope

I'm just disappointed that there isn't s slap in the face reason to upgrade.

£10/month for unlimited UK calls & texts + 30GB of data on Smarty.

Double that to go with Three direct but get some other potential benefits like roaming etc.

I pay £34.00 for 2 phones, my wife is on a Samsung e20 thing on contract and I have my S7 on a sim only deal.

100GB of data to share and unlimited text and calls, seems a good deal to me.

Its a recognised phenomenon and issue for phone manufacturers. Theres little advantage to upgrading.

Like you i've an S8+ and love tech, but i just cant find a reason to change. I bought it outright new, so just have a sim only monthly cost.

Cant see me changing any time soon either - the phone does everything i need of it and more.

Apart from breakage/failure, the only reason to upgrade is regularly reaching the limits of the equipment.

Its like PCs as well. My desktop upstairs is easily 8 years old. I stuck an SSD in it when i got it a couple of years ago. It happily does all my work needs of it and powers two 27 inch screens. Cant think why i'd ever replace it until it fails / stops accepting upgrades.

Laptops granted, have got lighter and thinner at any given price point, but again, not feeling any urge to upgrade my current ultrabook until i have some sort of failure.

If any new mobile doesn't offer anything you feel will make a definite improvement to your personal use of it, then you know the answer is to stay with what you already have.

It only makes sense to upgrade if the upgrade feels worth any additional cost. Doesn't make sense to upgrade for no actual benefit beyond shiny new toy.

Personally, I like the latest camera tech as a hobby photographer and always appreciate the best screen I can get. Not everyone is the same in terms of what is 'good enough'.

I think sim only is the way to go dude. If the phone is good the I'd maybe consider looking at a sim only. I'm on voxi which is owned by Vodafone and get 20gb for £15 a month. Same signal as Vodafone, all texts and emails are from Vodafone too.

What he said.

£60 PCM for an S10 is nuts. Should be looking at less than half that.

I'm still using a 4 year old iPhone 6S, and I'm fairly enthusiastic about new tech. I pay £16 a month for a BT SIM with 80GB of 'superfast' (whatever that means) data.

I looked at the 7, the 8, the X and the 11 variants of iPhones as they came out (along with Samsung equivalents) and nothing made me want to shell out another £600-£1200.

Manufacturers try to eek out new features in an effort to lure customers in to upgrading in what is now a mature market. Sure, the latest phones have much better camera and video features, and are faster, but I can't justify the cost when my 6S does everything I need.

This is weird the past day or so I have been fighting this same dilemma, upgrade my Huawei P20 pro or keep the phone and chuck in a pay as you go sim card.

I don't see phones if that's what they should still be called getting significantly better than what they already are.

Decent camera, fast loading and a nice screen what else could you need?

My contracts up in a few months unless something blows me away il get the pay as you go sim and stick with the p20.

I don't see them as phones anymore, they are mobiles, ultra-portable PC's in effect. I rarely use mine to actual make or take calls from! It's text, email, web, multi-media, camera mostly.

Most mobiles have reached the point where they are essentially all the majority of us need so upgrading needs to have some 'must-have' or 'really-want' evolution to justify the ever-increasing cost of more sophisticated tech as these devices become more and more capable. It is just a question of how capable you need it to be vs cost.

Impressed you got a new S8+ screen for £130. My local official Samsung service centre charged me about twice that 2 years ago, and even now they are still quoting over £200, and the local corner shops are similar.

I've got a crack down the very edge of my S8+ which has made me tempted to upgrade, but there just isn't anything my phone lacks. Current tentative plan is to wait until the S20s are in the shops and then maybe pick up an S10+ if the price drops a bit.

Welcome to middle age! You'll now make decisions on what to spend your money on based on practicalities rather than style/fashion.

From what you've said so far, you've made the correct decision to not waste money on a new device, given that your current device still does everything you need it to and you don't have the fear of missing out.
