I have a very odd issue that is driving me mad...

I create Word document on my Mac. Save them to OneDrive, or saved locally, the same issue is happening…

I email the document as an attachment, dragged from my desktop (not onedrive) to a colleague (running 365 on W10). The first time they try to open the document they get the below error. The redacted text is my local username. It times out after a few minutes and subsequent openings are fine. Same for other colleagues. Happens with most Word docs and not others. Doesn’t happen to PPTs/Excels.

I am running with the early release (Insider Slow)

I have tried flushing my Outlook cache, reboot, used ONYX to check permissions and emptied caches. I took a clean version of the Word Templates from our corporate drive and it still happens…

Before I reinstall office (and revert to standard production build) or rebuild my machine... any ideas?

Looks like you're dragging a shortcut, not the actual .doc.

Definitely the actual doc.

That was my first thought, given that the error points to a UNC path.

OP, have you tried attaching the doc in the old fashioned way just for test purposes?

So the path is \\users\your.username\filename? That's what is Word is trying to open and will fail if that file doesn't exist.

Can the user get to \\users\your.username? Unless there is a share called users then they won't be able to and that's your issue. Looks like it's trying to share a local path form your own PC. If you are using OneDrive, what is this email attachment malarkey about? Share from OneDrive directly.

Should have said, they have the same issue when they try to open in Onedrive when I put it in the shared folder as when opening from email.

What I don't understand is that when the error "times out", the document opens for them.

It wouldn't normally be a show stopper, but some of my docs go to our CEO and it just looks bad.

Hmm, almost sounds like it's looking for an "online" version, that times out so it just resorts to a local copy.

This happens for all docs?

Template or something embedded that it's trying to get to?

Do File > Info > Inspect Document and it'll tell you if there's something like that going on.

Yeah that's my guess.

I've seen this before with certain Word documents but as I'm a chimp with Word I just bounce them to our Help Desk so I don't know what exactly it is.

Or File > Properties on a Mac. Location will show you where it is.

The file is definitely on my desktop. I've been using Macs since 1988 so know some of the basics... it is not a link, etc smile

Sadly document properties is not available in O365 Mac in Word... so no object inspection available?
