Morning all, I set myself up as a self employed tree surgeon about a year ago now and naturally wanted a website. I was steered towards Wordpress but I must admit that I am finding it a bit of a pain to work with. It seems to me to be geared to those who have a bit of website/design knowledge, which is something I don't have. So, my question is, is Wix a more novice friendly platform? I want 5-6 pages, a blog and the ability to easily add photos to a gallery page. Wordpress just leaves me scratching my head with the ability to easily add or modify pages. I don't mind starting from scratch but I don't want to waste my time. Cheers.

ask yourself what you are trying to do with the website:
- just a presence in case people look you up
- a way of bringing in new business
- ???
- does work / contact come from the website or facebook?
what is your current source of income / what sources of income would you like?

wordpress was originally a blogging platform which has morphed into a more general platform such that it doesn't fully know what it is now - but tries to be all things to all people... At its simplest you can have a template and it should be fairly easy to maintain - just tweaking the odd bit of information...

wix is probably the worst technology platform in existence - I have never seen a really good website built on wix - so it tends to give an impression of built cheaply which might say something about your business...

squarespace is an alternative which is between the two...

or get a company to build you a simple brochure website - they will manage it for you, cost probably from about £500ish but you hand it over to a professional wink and then focus on your social media which is easier to maintain - using the website simply as a backstop to show that you have a professional presence...

Not sure what the other poster was doing to have a downer on Wix like that, I've used.it and it works fine. Yes it's got it's quirks but it's a damn sight easier and more straight forward to use than wordpress.

Of course there are alternatives as mentioned, I think GoDaddy have something similar too, but in my experience any of them would be better than wordpress if you just want a business website to let you get on with your actual business instead of spending all your time building the website

I have just found that Wordpress is very time consuming to make changes with. I basically want a website that has a few pages (intro, services, contact, gallery and blog) that is easy to set up and maintain. Wordpress for me is not. I do post quite a lot on social media (instagram and facebook) but just want to have a more professional looking website. I appreciate that I could pay someone to do this, but right now, this isn't possible as I have had to invest in a wood chipper at many thousands of pounds. A few people I have spoken to have said that Wix is decent enough, but I wanted to get some non-biased opinions (if possible).

16+ years of running a company building websites - wix code is technically very poor and does not lead to good websites in the majority of cases wink
can it be used - yes, but I would definitely look at Squarespace rather than wix

ultimately any presence on the web is probably better than none - and if you find wordpress too complex, then find a solution you are happy with smile
it is difficult to answer these types of question - you say that you have spoken to people who think that Wix is decent - at a technical level it is not - but if it does what you want, then great - enjoy it, don't overthink it - find something that works for you and get on with the real work!

I currently have web presence but am not happy with the end result. I personally find it too complex hence I am trying to find a solution I am happy with and hence I am on here seeking advice. Similarly, I don't want to spend hours and hours searching for a solution that is unknown to me, because I am non the wiser with the differences between Wix and Wordpress. While I know people who say Wix is spot on, on the flip side, they don't have any experience with Wordpress.

I'd argue 16 years of building websites means you aren't the wix target market!

Any of these sorts of platforms are a compromise, it's a question of whether or not you're happy with that compromise. I used it for a cycling club, and it worked fine, having said that some other members have since modified it and not checked it properly so it now looks st on a mobile, but it didn't used to

The advantage of Wix and probably other competitors is you can try it for free, without commitment.

I'd say to the OP to spend an evening giving one of them a go and see how you get on.

Btw 35 years in IT 😉

oh - for sure, agree I am not the wix target market - the point though is that there are better options...

Cheers for that. I have had a look at Wix and found a couple of layouts that work for me. I realise that it may not have the polished results of a bespoke website, but I just want a presence online that is easy for me to maintain. Give me a tree or an engine over all this any day of the week! Many thanks again.

I was trying to use Wordpress last night for about 3 fking hours just trying to understand the menu system to add categories to a menu. Load of st. It was ridiculous.

Take a look for a laugh this took 3+ hours!

All I want is separate pages for different make of cars, then separate models within the make. (This is non-commercial)

I am glad I am not the only one who finds it less than intuitive! Good luck with it though and I feel your pain!

I learned Wordpress a few years ago as it was recommended here and it felt the right product to go with at the time. I'm glad I got to grips with it as I've built a few sites since, but I have to agree with the general sentiment here and I'm actually dropping my own Wordpress site and rebuilding it with static HTML. There's just too many security issues and updates with WP now that even a basic site like mine has become a pain to manage. Really can't wait to bin it!

I'd probably go with squarespace if I wanted a managed system though.

Drag and drop website builders like wix, weebly etc are OK, but do remember to check it looks good on a mobile phone and tablet.
