We need a new telly, ideally 50 to 55"

Currently have a Samsung 40" 3D set and the picture on HD is superb, and even SD is very good (source permitting).

I borrowed a 4k LG a while back, but the SD picture was dismal, and given that there are still so many SD broadcasts...

Budget up to £400 - could possibly go and extra £50 but would prefer not to.

Really not bothered about 4k.

Freeview (Terrestrial) would be good.

Any recommendations please?

TIA

Cant help with the choice but a 4k panel (most of what is sold now I think?) will not show SD in a great light, it is too far removed. HD such as your existing panel will always show SD better. If you are on a main transmitter, you will have a larger selection of HD channels than a fill in transmitter. Usually.

I also agree with this and I had a 3D 40" Samsung and it was good for both HD and SD. I now have a couple of 4k Samsungs(49" and 65") and HD looks brilliant but SD looks pretty pony though.

The fact that your 4k screens are considerably bigger will no doubt make SD look far worse too.

Just to provide thread closure - I ended up buying a Samsung UE50RU7470

Only a couple of hours in, but so far it looks ok. I've not tweaked anything as yet.

I've got the same TV(65") and I do think that the picture is really good in HD and 4K for sure. thumbup

I would be looking at disabling post processing and see what difference it makes for you. Comes in many names. Mine was stuff like "edge enhancer" and "vertical sharpness" (LG TV).
