How do i buy orig reg numberplates BEFORE I sell a car?

Just preparing to put a car back on the standard plates in anticipation of a sale as then it can be driven away without my cherished plate 'wrongly' on it, but they need docs to say I have rights to this number which i wont have till i see the dosh in my bank on the day and do the DVLA gubbins online? Any solution in trying to be prepared?!

Just put your plate on retention and they will mail you a cert with the old number allocated. You can get plates made with this.

As already stated, transfer off £80 wait for new V5, sell the car on, simple.

I cant do any of that until i know it's 100% sold and paid for though! Which will be on the day - not before.

Why? If you’re selling the car just take the plate off now. For the sake of a small amount of admin now it will save you lots of heartache/hassle

If you intend to keep the reg, get it off, as it appears you intend to sell the car at some time in the future.

In fact it's best to do that so all the paperwork is in your hand (new V5) to give to buyer.

Don't forget to tell insurer

It is possible to transfer the Rev off at point of sale, but not without its risks and requires a compliant buyer. Save yourself the hassle and put your plate onto retention ASAP.

In terms of getting the plates for the original registration number, just order some online and you won’t need the docs...

Clearly I want cheap stopgap plates as a new owner is quite likely to put his own on it. Everyone on ebay wants war and peace on docs/ID!

I won't retain the number until I 100% know its sold. May well end up keeping it as if I don't achieve what i need i cant buy the specific intended next car.

I'll just buy some 100% exact same as legal showplates i guess.

I think you'll find most of the ebay sellers don't actually wait for any info and send the plates regardless.

But yes the only variation with (many) show plates is no maker's name - which is my preference.

If you think about the legal standpoint it is very hard to legislate not to produce something that is not a number plate.

Unless you ban all small reflective signs.
