On Monday I’m starting a new role as a 6th form Teacher. I’ve been contemplating it for around 10 years and finally the right opportunity has come along.

My wife is a secondary school teacher so I’ve seen the rougher end, but am interested to get peoples first hand experiences.

I’ll be an Engineering Tutor with a CAD bias...

Teacher or tutor... I'm the latter 16+. It's not always easy but the kids can be great. Downsides, admin, planning and assessment. As much contact time as paperwork. if you are really organised and nail your planning then it can be a <40 hour week. However, I just spent my whole half term getting assessments and evidence in order, but thats my own fault.

See "Best perks of my job" thread... not all bad.

Neither - Programme Leader whatever that means?!

Thanks for replying. Did you go into teaching/tutoring directly or after working elsewhere before?

Programme leader is definitely a position that does not need qualified teacher status .I was introduced as "Special Catering Projects Manager"... so basically clean out the sinks and teach 30+ kids at the same time!

My background was adult education, training and cheffing. I have done a lot of work with kids (managed a residential education centre etc) .

I'ts far more about programme and staff management than anything else. Especially the staff element!
