After a break of 6 and a half years I'm looking at buying another bike. I had been riding for 10 years when a very controlling (now ex) wife caused me to sell up. I'll be starting from scratch kit wise aswell so I've budgeted a total of £5000. £4k for the bike and the remaining £1k for kit.

So, for the bike. I'm only a short lad (5'6") but my last bike was a Thunderace which I really enjoyed riding despite it being a big old barge of a thing. I'm thinking Sports Tourer and browsing at Triumph Sprint ST 1050's and ZZR1400's though a lot of them seem to be what I would class as high mileage for a bike with 40k plus miles.

Any other suggestions for a good bike to return on, or feedback from owners of those bikes about mileage etc would be greatly received.

Finally, I will be doing a refresher course with my local centre before going back on the road alone.

Buy on condition and fit for you. There really aren’t any bad options and there will be as many make/model recommendations as there are responses to this thread.

40k miles with a full (ideally dealer) service history is not a real concern as long as consideration for wear of things like suspension, brakes etc. is given.

Given you’re looking at the likes of the ZZR1400 and Sprint, I’d suggest also looking at a K1300S with a low seat.

How about a Kawasaki Z1000SX? E.g.

Or perhaps a VFR1200?
