I'll be hopefully looking for a new weekend toy in the coming months, so far I've narrowed it to;

R8 - preferably v10 manual but possibly v8
Vantage S
BMW i8
Porsche 911 - 997 turbo or newer 991
Nissan GTR - 2012 onwards with litchfield mods
F-Type V8 r

I'm learning towards the R8 as I've always wanted one, would appreciate any thoughts.

My thoughts exactly. The V10 mated to a manual gearbox is a combination that I would find pretty hard to resist.

A Nissan GTR would also be in with a shout too, and I've always been a big fan performance wise for sure.

From your list the 997 turbo would be a safe bet and hopefully hold some value.

R8 would be my choice on the list and would be on my shortlist too.

I had a similar list several years ago

In the end I got my 991s and haven't regretted it but would have possibly gone for the R8 apart from I wanted a S-tronic rather than manual and could only afford the R-tronic at the time which didn't get such good reviews.

another option I considered was the Lotus evora 400 but again I was looking at the ips version,

it was discounted in the end because there weren't many coming up for sale and I wasn't convinced on the interior.

They all have their appeal so definitely worth going for a few test drives,
preferably for a decent distance and over a range of road surfaces to get a good feel for the car.

they're all going to feel quite different and you may well find the driving position, noise, ride quality, handling and just the general way they make you feel has a bigger impact than someone's opinion on the internet.

Your suggestions would all make good sport/GT cars if that's what you are after but if you're looking for a car just for driving pleasure..




You'll also suffer with almost zero depreciation if mileage is limited.

Thanks for the replies.

I should of been more clear on what I want out of the car, it'll replace my current Z4M Coupe, and I'm not interested in tracking my own cars. It's for Sunday morning blasts to mid Wales, European road trips etc. I want it to be modern(ish) and be comfortable and well equipped, stunning to look at, reliable and, like my Z4MC, be a safe long term proposition from a financial perspective, I think manual gearbox and natural aspiration would help.

I love Lotus but wouldn't want to own one, some suggestions are too old, too raw etc.

I think the 991 suggestions are a bit more "use it every day" and not enough of an event, even though they are very accomplished.

I agree. Fantastically accomplished cars but never going to put the smile on your face the V10 R8 above would every time you open the garage.

There is no need for him to say that someone else's car ideas are uninspiring and telling him what a proper weekend toy is.

Not usually a fan of white either but do think it really suits the R8, especially in spyder form. Somehow the styling doesn't seem to have aged as much as it does in black/grey etc?

Had a fun dice with an almost identical car to this a couple of weeks back. Looked great and sounded absolutely epic.

Also wouldn't want to live with a convertible every day but for a weekend car it gives you more options and improves the experience IMHO.

That looks great to my eyes for sure and it even looks decent roof up. I also like that there are no roll over hoops behind the seats and it's flat.

OP I was never much of a fan of convertibles years ago but I do love them now though. They add an extra dimension to the driving experience for me, plus you get to enjoy the engine/exhaust noise so much more too.
