Late NIP for speeding - what's the state of play?

My girlfriend has received a NIP for a speeding offence. First thing she says is "that was ages ago!" Check the date of the offence, and it was over 3 months ago, back in November. This is not a letter that went missing - it's dated this Monday.
It is my understanding that the NIP had to be served within 14 days. What are our next steps? Not much revealed by a quick Google apart from "14 days, excluding things like postal strikes"

So, she knew about the speeding before the letter?
Was she stopped at the time?
I shpudl clarify, when she read where it had taken place, she remembered THINKING that she might have been caught. She wasn't stopped at the time. She hasn't heard anything about it until now Was she stopped at the time?
99% of the time it has met the 14 day requirement - quick look at the V5C confirms that.
0.5% of the time a helpful dodgy person will help you, if you're a celebrity like Beckham.
0.5% of the time is is genuinely late. However, the genuinely late ones tend to be a day or so late. You have to ask why it has taken 3 months to get to you.
If you're the name & address on the V5C why has it taken 3 months to find you and then why has somebody at 2.5 months eventually found the details that could have been found in 10 minutes and then still decided to send the letter out.

An afternoon on a SAC and all is done and dusted, if she qualifies for one.

It was for me, I did one on Tuesday for what I was told was 84 in a 70. I was in the van, I should have been done for 84 in a 60, they didn't spot the mistake until I was at the course and I dodged 3 points. As a bonus, the course was interesting and informative and the guys running it kept it like that by making things light hearted. It wasn't what I was expecting and I'm glad to have had the opportunity.An afternoon on a SAC and all is done and dusted, if she qualifies for one.

I've found the V5, she is the registered keeper. We have moved since she got this car. The V5 has been updated - there is what looks like a date at the bottom of the page which would suggest she changed it back in April last year. It certainly was a long time ago, before November. sxmwht said:

I guess they are asking for the driver's details... that part is still live and you must reply.However, I would attach a letter saying that the NIP was delivered out of time and is therefore a bar to prosecution.
If the above is the case, they might still try it on and offer her a course... which you can decline.

Looks like it’s been served too late to me!As has been said you must still reply naming the driver, or you could collect 6 points and a big fine for a separate offence. If it is as you say it looks like a slam dunk for late service, For it to be so late points to them trying their luck after it fell down the back of the filing cabinet and the cleaner found it!
