i'm changing my mind daily about what i want to replace my modified civic type-r with. i've been through:
ZM3 coupe(too expensive+need warranty)
E36 M3 coupe (too expensive to insure for some reason and getting old)
S2 elise 111s(still a possibility but pushing my budget)
and currently an S1 Exige (in met gray with black wheels;))

i only use my car at weekends and whilst i spend a couple of hours on the motorway i spend as much time on twisty a and b roads at either end of the journey. i just don't know what it would be like to live with for long trips etc. i want a raw driving experience and i'm not bothered about creature comforts within reason (did the exige come with a stereo?) and i love the way it looks (and is) like a racing car!

many thanks in advance for any advice...

Go for it but remember the running costs can be extremely high.

111S over budget? cost is about the same as an S1 Exige (£18-£25k) and it will be cheaper to run, and easier to live with

If it's in gunmetal grey...please let me know. That colour seems to be as rare as chickens teeth.

I had given up looking for one in that colour and decided to go down the new (albeit pricier) S2 route.

Still a couple of months off though.

yeah just realised they are pretty similar price wise-just makes it harder! is the exige more expensive to run than elise? servicing etc?

you're right about the grey-they mostly seem to be silver or orange!

I wouldn't go with the Exige... I got very close to buying one and for me it would be ideal (ie, only really need the car for weekends),,, but the VHPD engine is a pig regardless of what people might say.... It will go pop at some stage and it's scary expensive.

The S2 111S is a got option at £17k+.

S1 Exige prices have gone up due to it being trackday season but decent ones will always reach a premium (I almost went for a yellow 190 with 7k mileage which was asking £25k ... was going to pay approx £21k for it).

My personal favourite is what I've just very relucantly sold... an absolutely mint ultra-low mileage S1 111S with sports exhaust, induction kit, and 160TB... add some proper suspension (Nitron or similar) and you have a cracking fast car which will stand you in at no more than £15k, will hold it's value (the S1 111S is one of the rarer yet most complete Loti... thanks to close ratio gearbox and excellent VVC engine), and be a hoot to drive.

At £15k, you could then buy a Pug 106 Rallye for everyday hooning about and still have change from £17k!

S1 Exige will be a fair bit more to run than a 111S. The engine is very highly tuned and could require costly rebuilds.

Also the S1 Exige gets bloody hot and the aircon in them (if fitted) isnt particularly effective

If you intent to track it then go for it but if its for a general everyday driver I would go with the 111S or other S2 variant which will be a lot easier to live with.

hi,

interesting thread re running costs on the exige. i had no idea it was more costly to run.

1. would the exige s2 cost more to run over the 111R ? i.e does that same formula apply i.e servicing, engine tunning etc....

2. and if so how much £££ are we talking about ?

Re running an exige as "everyday car", it must be a pain on wet days ? i.e slick tyres, rear wheel drive and even worse in the snow ! im guessing you guys need to drive pretty god damn carefully ?

Cheers
Scott

ps im sure it more that makes up for it on the dry days though : )

Not had my Exige serviced yet but it should be the same as the 111R as its essentially the same apart from the body, suspension and tyres.

As for prices I dont know yet. Tyres are probably going to be the biggest running cost.

S1 Exige is different though as it uses the VHPD engine as does the S1 Sport 190 which is not going to be as reliable as the Toyota unit

So presumably if i do decide to buy an s1 exige it would be better to go for the standard engine as opposed to the 190 upgrade which must be more stressed. remember evo saying the standard engine runs smoother too...either that or i'll have to wait for s2 prices to drop!

The 177bhp is still plenty quick enough but you would probably want to get the upgrade done at some point anyway so would probably be better off finding a car which aleady has it done.

IIRC, EVO had their 340R (VHPD powered, with upgrade) converted to an Emerald ECU. It gave more power, much smoother running and a huge jump in fuel economy
