Cheapest/easiest is a small DJ controller like this - https://www.djkit.com/pioneer-dj/pioneer-ddj-sb3.h...
The kit includes the software, so all you need are a couple of leads, headphones, and some mp3's.
Be wary of some other controllers which don't include software, or cheaper brands which will break after a few hours abuse.

I DJ from time to time just for fun and have bought new kit recently.
I have a Numark mixtrack platinum which is a usb controller which plugs into a laptop and has both output for sound into an external amplifier, and a headphone jack. Easy and fun to use.
Software i use is Algoriddim - it is about £50 but the advantage is you can use Spotify directly (if you have a subscription). The great thing being that you can stream any track you want, any type of genre without having to purchase MP3’s which will get expensive and also out of date quickly for your son I would imagine whilst he is learning the ropes.
You then need some speakers - you can get a active speakers where you can plug the output from the mixer directly into them which is probably best, and saves separate amp and speakers.

For just having a play - VirtualDJ is a good, free bit of software https://www.virtualdj.com/download/
Pioneer Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor and Virtual DJ are the biggest names in DJ software. You’ll need a controller as posted above, Pioneer do ones that support their own Rekordbox software and others that support Serato, Numark make lots of Serato kit and are at the budget end of the market.
