Just finished spraying the Epoxy Mastic 121 from Rustbusters range. 2.5ltrs just did the job with barely a drop left over. It was done in a single coat using an HVLP turbine setup with a top feed gun and a 2.8mm needle.

So the final cost for a DIY outrigger replacement , strip chassis and paint is a princely £320.00, nearly half that cost was for the shot blasting, the only bit I couldn't DIY.

There's plenty of write ups about chassis restoration going on at the moment, so I haven't done yet another thread. However, these used professional help for the actual restoration, so if anyone is interested in details of steelwork, welding, preparation or painting, I would be happy to post up a more detailed account. It's all well within the scope of the DIY enthusiast.

Did you manage to paint the wishbones and brackets etc with your 2.5 L of paint Dougal or just the chassis. I’m told a 161 or 181 nozzle should do it but I have no idea what that really means. 1.61 mm maybe. Painter knows thank goodness.

Just the chassis, the wishbones etc had been powdercoated couple of years ago, so ok for now.
The needle size is dependent on the type of spray equipment being used. HVLP equipment generally use larger needles and spray a heavier coat.

That's looking mighty fine there Mr D cool

I did my S chassis 8 years ago, cost less than £30 for the steel and £50 for the coded welder once I had Tacked everything in place. I did do the chassis in his workshop mind you. Also being a compete amateur and not familiar with the marine coating systems I used 3 coats of 'Smoothrite' I used different colours so any chips etc. I could tell how deep Since then I have recoated as I wanted a different colour. I did lay Denso tape on the upper sides of thee outriggers and when I did a body off in the last year to swap engines I fully inspected the chassis and found no problems. However I did find a couple of brown marks on the trailing arms which were new (powder coated) prior to purchasing the car, attacking these with a 80 grit grinder revealed a layer of rust under the coating. £100 later and these were powder coated again. I wrapped the outriggers again in Denso tape and fitted mud flaps.

Thanks, it is nice to be freshly painted and hopefully rust free at this stage.
I will certainly fit mudflaps, yet to be made, you can see the brackets have been added for these.
Regards further protection for the vulnerable corners and tops of the outer rails, I thought I might mask off and apply Ditrol to these parts only.
