I should be moving soon, and when I do I want to replace the soundbar with a decent hifi system.

The room is 15ftx12ft and the distance between speakers and listening position would be on the longer distance, approx 14 ft.

I am after some speakers that are ‘wife friendly’ and sound good at moderate listening volumes.

I like bass in a speaker too, something that can reach relatively deep but has an agile bass.

I used to like my old Rega Ela’s but they are not wife friendly hehe

Ideally £500 or under

First thought was Q Acoustics 3050 but I’m hearing horn speakers are the best for moderate volumes, not many good looking ones around though!

My advice will be to try and get some sort of demo of the Q Acoustics speakers, and see if their appearance is acceptable. At least then you’ll have something to go on.
£500 is a decent chunk of money, so try and get a home demo with anything she likes.

She likes the look of the Q 3050s. I like them too and the price is good, they are a no brainer if they sound good at low volumes.

Good luck getting horn speakers without adding a 0 to your budget.

You need to go listen, no one here can tell you what suits your other gear and what suits your ears

Yes I appreciate that I will ultimately have to audition but it never does any harm to gather some contenders first.

I see there are a fair few Klipsch speakers on eBay but ultimately the ones I've seen probably won't get past the mrs... And to be fair I'm not putting this entirely on her as, and this will sound shallow, I also want them to look nice. biggrin

Lol. It’s not hollow at all! If you don’t have a dedicated listening room, they need to be easy on the eye.

Edit: I mean the speakers....

I have a set of Q acoustic 3050 in my office, the older version. They are nice speakers but i think i paid circa £250 for them and for that sort of money you cannot really grumble.

Waring - Budget stretch abit, but for £700.00 i picked up a pair of Neat Iota Alphas (You need to be a little keen on Ebay as they come up at this price every month or so) They are a tiny pair of floor standing speakers, about as wife friendly as they come (since installing them in our front rooms she has not even noticed them!). They have downward firing base drivers and teamed up with my 32.5/hicap/250 amp, absolutely rock with loads of base.

I appreciate they've been around for a while, but I bought a pair of Q Acoustic BT3's and a Rel T-Zero subwoofer for about your budget. They sound fantastic. Speakers are very easy to listen too, lots of detail and a lovely mid range. Sub is ace, really punchy and taught and fills in where the BT3's roll off a treat.

Wife friendly, due to compact size of speaker and sub, and the fact there's no need for an amp etc.

eta:looks like you're after floor standers, so maybe not relevant.

I recently grabbed a set of warfdale DX2 and really happy with them @ £400

Added a pair of height speakers with a Denon AVRX2600 for a budget Dolby Atmos setup.

I tried the Q Acoustics alongside Dali Oberons, and preferred the Dali personally. Just sounded cleaner to me

Definitely worth a listen as everyone is different

There’s no reviews yet but the new Monitor Audio Bronze range is being previewed. Looks and most likely sound of current Silver range. They always get great reviews.

I've got some PMC Twenty5.21's - smallish standmount speakers but they have an astonishing amount of tight and agile bass for their size when plugged into my Naim system, especially when cranked up, and are superbly clear as they should for the price.
Having said that, they do lack a bit of low volume room filling bass if thats what you want.

Worth going to a hi fi shop and listening to a few, then taking some home to try. I tried speakers from ATC, B&W, PMC and Spendor before picking the PMC as the best blend for what I wanted. The difference in how each presented music of all sorts was pretty big - I'm sure thats the same between speakers at all price levels.

I'm not an audiophile so no idea technically but the ones I liked the sound of and bought were Dali Oberon 3. Should be right on budget.

As already said you should listen first, as everyone likes different things, but I would suggest you listen to the new Monitor Audio Bronze range. I heard them at the Bristol Show (together with a Roksan CD player and amp) and they were excellent
