I drove my db9 for a short distance today and noticed before I got to the end of my road that there was a strange metallic rasping / ticking sound that increased / decreased in line with my speed (wasn't related to which gear I was in), that sounded as if it was coming from the rear near side wheel.

I stopped and checked and could see nothing beneath the car, in the wheel arch, snagged in the caliper or anything in the wheel spokes. I turned around and drove home again and the noise persisted and then more thoroughly checked again - nothing apparent.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Could be any number of things.

Can you jack up the car and see if the wheels can be spun by hand?

Had this on my V8 Vantage. It was a small stone stuck on pad clicking on grooves in disc. I got someone to walk alongside to ascertain which wheel, but I reckon a sharp tap on the brake forwards and then in reverse should dislodge without having to take the wheel off.

Have you checked right around the tyre tread? a screw or nail in the tyre will also make the sound that you describe.

^^^ Almost always this. Try reversing; usually knocks it loose.

Thank you for the advice everyone. It makes perfect sense, I have a gravel drive and power washed the car last week. I suspect a stone was flicked up and become lodged as you suggest - I'll check it and fix next weekend.

Thanks again

I have had this a few times on my db9. It’s a grating/rubbing metallic sound which is rather alarming. On every occasion I have pulled over quickly and stopped, had a look around, found nothing, driven off and its gone. I agree it is likely a small stone that has got temporarily lodged somewhere it shouldn’t. Hopefully!

Just to let you know, I never found out if it was a stone causing the noise, but it had gone after I'd reversed out of the garage at the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback folks.
