Shoes on side of the road - what's that all about?

Why do I keep seeing shoes lying on the side of roads? Do people get fed up with what footwear they're wearing and take them off and lob them out the window

Well in some cases it's the scene of an accident, where footwear has been ejected as it happened or discarded by the medical professionals as they start to sort out the victim.

Not all of it mind. Just more than you might realise.

Last summer a pair of st-smeared men's underpants were abandoned outside my front gate. I can only guess that the alien tractor beams can't handle heavily soiled briefs either.

I was heartened to see while driving in the usa that the forlorn shoe at the roadside is much evident , as in the UK it should be greeted with a cry of
" Oovavoo" every time one is seen or else bad luck will befall.

Having never left shoes at the side of the road I can only assume that;
They stunk to high heaven, or
Someobody didnt want dog poo inside thier car so left their shoes behind, or
Someone was hit by a car - this often knocks you out of your shoes, or
The owner was too lazy to find bin so discarded them in the manner you might discard a cigarette butt, or
Its a secret code used by gypsy spies for the purpose of communicating with other gypsy spies

I always figured they were builder's boots / trainers, that were on the back of their tipper van and blew / fell off when driving along at speed. They probably changed out of those shoes to do the job then left them perched precariously on a box or something until they fall off.
