Hi guys

I've been leasing for years, looking to get rid of the monthly overhead and buy something half decent that will last 3-5 years (15,000 miles per year).

Ideally looking to spend £10-15k depending on the car. Really want something bullet proof (probably doesn't exist) or a good approved used warranty, like sometimes VW Das Welt Auto does 2 year warranty and 2 services.

Criteria:

Automatic
Reliable: Notably good reliabilty at 4-7 years old or good approved used warranty
Comfortable
Fairly cheap to run (<£200 tax, >40mpg)
Estate / small SUV

Contenders:

Volvo V60
Volvo V70
Skoda Superb
Skoda Octavia
BMW 520d
Mazda CX-5
Mitsubishi ASX
Mitsubishi Outlander
Ford Mondeo
VW Passat
VW Tiguan (wife already has one though, so don't really want two of them!)

Probably all 2l or 2.2l diesel

Any alarm bells to watch out for on these cars? Considering this 520d SE but absolutely dreading breakdown stress/bills, been bitten by a 320d many years ago, hopefully things have improved since then.

Based in East Anglia if anyone happens to know of anything locally.

I'd go for a 330d/530d. There's a big difference between the reliability, smoothness and refinement of the 6 cylinder engines over the 4 cylinder ones.

Mercedes E220 CDI estate - quite a few within your budget with less than 50k miles, that have loads of years and miles left in them, they wear them well. In contrast to BMWs, the Merc 4 cylinder engines seem to be the ones to go for over 6 cylinder if reliability is key.

A few owners on here that have run these into 200k miles with not much other than regular servicing. I sold my last one for £13k at 5yrs old and 45k miles, wish I'd kept it.
