Speed limit on Motorway slip road

Evening all,
I was joining the M6 (eastbound) from the M42. Anyone who has used this sliproad will know it's a big long sweeping 270 degree turn that lasts nearly a mile!
It was dark and fairly late at night with not much traffic around. As I left the M42 and joined the slip road the first gantry showed a 50mph limit so I slowed to this. Carried on round to the next gantry which showed a 30mph limit! WTF. I reluctantly slowed to this, much to the annoyance of the driver behind me. The odd thing is there were no traffic problems whatsoever and no apparent reason for the limit. I crawled round the corner and eventually started approaching the motorway, still crawling at 30, and saw the traffic on the motorway was all doing 60-70mph+. Quite frankly, continuing this madness and trying to join the M6 at 30mph would have been downright dangerous. The effing crazy thing is that I found myself in quite a dangerous situation caused by obeying the speed limit signs.
Am I missing something? Or is this just another oversight by the architects of the not-so-smart motorways that our government are so proud of?

I’m confused. Which direction is eastbound on the M6? It would normally be described as north or southbound. I’m guessing you were travelling south and then joined the M6 to carry on southbound. If so, is the motorway managed there? I thought it ended on the southbound stretch at the M42. Admittedly I haven’t travelled down that stretch in a year or so, so it could have been upgraded. ( She doesn't drive)i can only think that there must have been severe speeds set prior to the junction for an incident probably near to or on the exit slip, once past it traffic will speed up, but the next signal for the "ENDS" would be after the entry slip, this would mean that it would also put severe speeds on the entry slip although it's just after any incident.

His company vehicle tracker emails his boss every time he exceeds 5mph over the mapped road limit
His boss got so sick of multiple emails a day because of ‘speeding’ on slip roads he now directs all the alerts to the junk inbox
Very handy for my pal as he no longer gets questioned when speeding

Can you post an example of these flashing red lights?Ignore the red box. This is obviously one of the later gantries most commonly found on Smart Motorways but the older amber matrices have an additional set of red lamps around them and show a red X with the flashing lamps alternating left and right rather than the usual up and down. You can see the additional lamps on the picture below.
Finding a picture of the older matrices with the red X on display was harder than I thought.
Please tell me this was an attempt at some manner of joke or pedantry?
