2012 6 Series Service History Query
Discussion
Hi All
I'm going to look at a 2012 6 Series Coupe 640d (F13) at the weekend but I have a slight concern in respect of the service history of the car. In the advert it says the car was last serviced in May 2017. I queried this with the seller who provided paperwork to support the services that had been performed on the car since new as below
All of this was done at BMW garages
I also have a service read out from June 2019 which was taken from the "ignition key" which states the below
The car is currently on 42k miles and hasn't been used since the readings above
It's not a private seller and the seller has great reviews online (and I've been given good feedback on here about them too) so I'm not too concerned about being mislead by them, I just want to sense check the above to see if there are any issues that mean it wouldn't be a good idea to buy this car
I'm relatively familiar with the variable servicing intervals on BMW's (I have a 2007 Z4) albeit with my own car even if the car doesn't need a service I get one done every 24 months (including brake fluid). My own car isn't new/smart enough to say exactly what it needs and when it just counts down the miles until it needs a service
Appreciate any advice on this

Quite a few BMW owners dont trust the 2 yr servicce intervals.. me included
Mine gets an oil and filter change every year
as a preventative measure...i ask them not to reset the OBC but i have invoices receipts from the dealer to prove.
Yours might have had the same annual oil and filter regime ?

The issue with the above is the 3 year gap between the last service and now (and the fact that it probably won't indicate it's due a service for a while still). That doesn't feel right to meMine gets an oil and filter change every year

I wouldn't worry too much, it is now 8 years old.
Basically it came to the dealer when the service was due, due to time not mileage, and now looks late, but not really. I would get it serviced straight away and you will be fine as long as the price etc. is right.
I think the sensible thing to ask then is that they service it before I buy it. I don't think I'm interested in buying a car and then having to take it for a service immediately after!Basically it came to the dealer when the service was due, due to time not mileage, and now looks late, but not really. Car is the one below

Looks nice.
I wouldn't worry about main dealer servicing now actually. At £16k now it won't lose much, I would just do an oil service every year or 10k miles and keep paperwork.
As someone buying that in 3 years time I would rather see 3 oil changes or whatever than BMWs 2 years or 20k miles.

They are always variable essentially it should be every 2 years (or around 15k - 18k ish, there is a few that guess like me my first was at 13k, I have seen some as high as 21k), so either way you put it there is a missing service from last year.
That all being said mine gets interim oil services between the normal CBS ones at 10k or every 12 months, it never reaches the 12 month marker, critically the CBS never gets reset at this interim service.
It then goes back in for the service which the CBS knows about, all I do is keep the records of the interim services with the rest of the records for the car (including every single bill (excluding fuel)).
The N57 does benefit from extra servicing like any car, but more so as the chain featured on the N57 is the same as the N47, and in many cases is the same as the chain setup used in the newer B series diesel engines (in fact most of the components in the newer B series diesel engines are the same as the final N series components).
and when BMW write in the their technical literature for the B57:
"For various reasons, the timing chain is subject to chain extension. This either results from the operating conditions (thermal expansion), setting operations (run-in behavior) or is wear-related. As already familiar from previous diesels the B57 engine also has chain pins coated in chrome nitride. This helps to reduced the wear of the chain by up to 70% compared to non-coated sleeve-type chains."
and various people I know from within BMW saying do "interim oil services", then put bluntly I will never blindly follow the CBS.

I've decided the best solution is to find another car where I don't have to worry about this. Plenty of others on the market so makes no sense to pick one with this "issue"That all being said mine gets interim oil services between the normal CBS ones at 10k or every 12 months, it never reaches the 12 month marker, critically the CBS never gets reset at this interim service.
