"Using Huawei for 5G like letting Nazis build British radar"
Discussion
Strong words indeed!
"Can I just simply say, imagine in 1939 had we been we developing our radar systems, we decided actually to have one of the Nazi companies in Germany involved directly in doing it. This is the level. ‘Oh, but we reduced to the 35% of the involvement, so only 35% was controlled by them.’ I wonder how ridiculous that is."
(Iain Duncan-Smith)
I don't find myself agreeing with IDS (or President Trump) regularly, but on this I think they're right, albeit the language is a little too strong for me.
I really think it's about time we called out the Chinese government on their ills, like their treatment of the Uyghurs. I don't think we'll see much from BoJo on this, what with them being so desperate to get trade deals in a post-brexit world.

Which alternate manufacturers would you prefer?
I'm guessing Cisco would love a piece of the pie. TBH that's my main theory for why Trump cares so much, but good things can be done for bad reasons
For me, if it is a choice between 5G and letting a corrupt foreign government get a backdoor into our data networks and not having 5G, then I'm quite happy with 4G.

The UK public don't care because they're happy to buy Huawei phones far cheaper and more capable than the alternatives, and ignore that all their personal information is going through a server that has no respect for personal data.
I think it's a mistake myself unless it's literally used for "dumb" devices like antennas and cables. But I suspect many of those aren't so dumb these days.

Siemens had a UK operation up to 1939. It was a hotbed of Nazi spies.
It was quite literally used to assess the British industrial complex and understand the capabilities and growth capacity. Amazing the access a salesman can get.Russ T Bolt said:

I realise that we do have Huawei kit within our ISPs already. I would like to see it phased out and I would like for us to not install any more of it.

Manageable risk == an opportunity to spy back on China? Can't see any other reason the security services would green light it. Then again, I am of course no expert on covert intelligence matters.
So the real question is who would we prefer to spy on us directly the Americans, the Chinese or some smaller country.
Personally it will may little difference, we all give away massive amounts of information
On a country level who will we stay friends with.
More likely to be the Americans and they will smile whilst screwing us over
