recording software for windows 10 - whats easy whats good

Hello . . .

wanting to do some home recording, simple stuff, drums guitars vocals etc . .

can anyone recommend a fairly easy to use program? I used to use Cubase a long
time ago, it was ok, but whats around now for windows10 ?

I plan to get a usb sound converter, something that will record 4 ( maybe 8 ) mics at once into the computer that i can then mix / overdub etc . . , keeping it simple and cheapish . . . . any preferences on these?

Assume I have no idea what I'm doing! . . . so need something fairly user friendly

You wont get any better than Audacity for something thats free and exceptionally user friendly, been using it for
years to do mixes and collaberations with folk all over the globe, plenty of effects etc, used by millions.

If you want easy to use and simplcity in use just click the download, set it up with your stuff and start recording.;)

is the latest cubase lite worth a look? or Garageband if it worls on windows, i'm not sure if that is mac only . . . .

any advice on usb sound converters, or are they all much the same?

Have a look at Reaper for Windows. I’ve been using the ‘trial’ (free!) version for about 6 months and it’s as good as Logic in my opinion for the home recorder!

The trial download will say you’ll need to buy it in 30 days (about £60 I think), but it’s still letting me carry on with the option of “I’m still evaluating” every time I open it!

Also, with sound cards, set a budget and get the best you can afford within that! I’ve used a £9.99, no brand multi input sound cards off of Amazon and they’ve worked for a live acoustic guitar, but the latency or delay you get is rubbish so not much cop for multi-tracking. I’ve also used pricey Behringer single inputs that were awesome, but you couldn’t record an acoustic drum kit with a single input, so it’s definitely the kind of thing that you get what you pay for!

Reaper is brilliant, but the OP is looking for something 'user friendly', and I wouldn't put Reaper in that description, it has
a very steep learning curve, in fact 2 guys I know have tried to learn it and had to give up, one of them said it 'fried his brain'
they both use Audacity now.

Focusrite make great interfaces. Just get the one that suits your needs/budget. Should be plenty on eBay with about 8 ins.

I was watching a review of a behringer interface i'm interested in on youtube and the
guy was using reaper, and i thought it looked it bit 'advanced' for me . . . .

I've watched a couple of the audacity tutorials on youtube too and it does look
quite simple . . . and probably easier for me to get along with . . . so think i'll probably give
Audacity a go and see how i get on . . thanks for the recommendation . . .

If you go for a steinberg USB interface, it comes with a free version of cubase that is good for starting with.

The good thing about this setup is it works out of the box with none of the latency issues you can get with other cheaper interfaces, and if you want more features you can upgrade to the next level of cubase with a very small fee.
