If a car tax runs out on June 30th, up to when can the car be legally driven on the road.

In other words what's the grace period if any?

I stand to be corrected but the "period of grace" is a myth as far as i know...

In theory you have no grace but in practice it will be al least a week before plod will care. I went through an ANPR sting with the tax two days out of date and nobody bothered to pull me, drove into a local centre with about ten BIBs checking for expired tax and none of them cared, went into the post office to buy a disc and came out to a round of applause from them.

I guess you have to be careful in case you get pulled by a cop that takes a dislike to you though.

I'm off to Le Mans and my tax disc expires on the 30th... but I'm doing some touring, so not back till July.

Go to the post office, and there is a form you can fill out to sort out a tax disc, if the reminder has yet to arrive... V10 IIRC...

Nothing to stop you renewing at PO after 16th of this month. If it is a continuation they allow 14 days before hand IIRC and only 2 days if there has been a break.

When I went to Australia I was away for 6 weeks - couldn't buy tax before leaving as it wasn't close enough to expiry date of existing tax. I asked them what I should do and they had no answer. So I drove without tax when I returned . . . it's an outdated syste that needs to be revised, especially as it's not spent on roads/transport anyway.
